Thank at this time please line up at the podium please limit your marks to three minutes I'd like your mind everyone subject to the very limited exceptions under the state's open meeting law the commission is not permitted to discuss or take action any items which do not appear on the agenda. We do not have anybody. Madame Sarprey, do we have any requests from the public wishing to pull any items from the consent calendar? There are none. Is there a motion to approve the consent calendar? I motion. A second. Aye. Second. All those in favour? Aye. Madam Secretary, please read the title for item E1. Yes. Yes. Parks, Equestrian and Community Services, Chair and Yes, the marks equestrian and community services chair and nominate committee will state the name of the committee accepts the nomination. When there are no reservations, the committee closed the nominations, a roll call vote for each nominee in order the nominations were received. When a nominee receives the majority of the commissioners' votes, that nominee shall be confirmed as the chair. We'll repeat the same process for vice chair. After selection of a vice chair, we'll take a brief break to change the name plates on the dius. That completes my report. Do any commissioners have questions for the staff on this? I do have a quick question. Do we have any discussion period prior to making the nominations or do we just need to jump right into it? We can jump right into it. We've never had discussions. It doesn't mean you can't, but if you feel free to, that's fine. I did just have a question for the rest of the commission. If that's okay, I was just curious because I was a little bit newer and I know Commissioner Marginal and Commissioner O'Kamble, both of you served on this commission prior to my joining. And I was just curious if either of you have served as the chair or vice chair prior to now No, we have not I have not The chair position is two years at the max got correct There's no more further questions for staff. I now open up nominations for Chair. Are there any nominations for Commissioner Chair? Can I make a nomination? I'd like to make a nomination that Estreau Compo is chair. Are there any other nominations? I'm not. I accept. Excellent. Are there any further nominations from the commissioners? Then I'd like to make a motion, is there a motion to approve? We'll need to go through each, each vote. Okay. Can I ask does anybody else wish to be part of, I mean, can we ask if anybody else would like to be? I believe you make a nomination they accept or not. So if anybody has any further nominations for chair, we will go to vice chair after this. Okay. So is there a motion to approve? So moved. Go each individual vote. Oh, I'm sorry. Commissioner Campbell. I'm voting for myself right. I just expect would like to accept and vote for myself. Thank you, Commissioner Manda. How do I know? I would like to nominate Andrew Comet. if he wishes to be nominated or accept the nomination. Thank you. I appreciate that nomination. Thank you. I was my intention to defer that to one of the one of you. Just in deference to your time already on the commission and I think it's important that everyone have an opportunity to serve as the chair and so with that I think I'll defer that nomination to Commissioner Oak-Himbo. Thank you. Thank you. And I guess that then shows like it's three A's. Or the nomination. Thank you commissioners. Moving on. We now take a two minute break. We're going to take a brief break for a moment and we'll switch the name plates and switch positions. Thank you. And then they go on to VP, right? Is that how? Oh, then we now have a VP. Okay. Where do you want us to move? Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. All right, Chair O'Compoh, you'll go ahead and start the nominations for Vice Chair. I now open the nominations for Vice Chair. Do you like to go down the line, or? I would like to open with the nomination. I'd like to nominate my commissioner, Arya Mahada Hanho. Thank you. I would like to defer that back to Matthew. Have you accept That? All right, you kicking it back to me? Okay. Yes. All right, fair enough. I'll accept that nomination then. Thank you. We have not helped ourselves on this commission with names that are easy to say. I'd like to call a call of me chair commissioner Barker yes. God I'm not going by steak and Barker that'd be harder. So I would I'd like to confirm that I would yes to that nomination of Commissioner Cuomo for a vice chair. Come here. Your vote. And then I would like to vote for Commissioner, remind me how to pronounce the last few. We have work. Combo. Combo as vice chair. I would, I'd like to vote for Commissioner Barker. Right, those are our nominations. Who's up? No, no, no for the nomination for Cuomo for vice chair also vote for yes all right Then I also vote for myself. Congratulations. Thank you. Hey, we did on the first try. We're now moving on to item E2. Madam Secretary, please read the title for item E2. Thank you. E2 is a staff report this evening and an events update of previous events that have just occurred a short time ago. Just wanted to give you an update on the 65th Suwalo's day parade. The annual annual event took place on Saturday, March 22 with local resident and equestrian Kathy Holman honored as our grand marshal. This year's event featured 77 entries including equestrian groups, walking ensembles, wagons, marching bands, and the iconic Budweiser Clydesdale horses to enhance the safety and improve the overall experience of the event. City staff implemented a strategic barrier system along with key points along the parade route as well as the high traffic areas around the pedestrian zones. It made for a wonderful event, very safe, river street market place reported an impressive 12,000 visitors the day, throughout the day, from start to finish with all the activities that they had there. And while MetroLink noted an increased ridership and estimated between 6,000 and 7,000 passengers traveled to San Juan Capastrano for the festivities. Staff feels the event went very smoothly with no major incidents reported. Everything went off without a hitch. No pun intended. The next update was for our sprick extravaganza. I know I did run into Commissioner Como at the event. Thank you for attending. Los Real's Park was the place to be on Saturday, April 12th for the city's annual spring extravaganza. Families came out to enjoy a fun-filled day with puppet shows, egg hunts, face painting, button making, spring-themed temporary tattoos, awesome balloon creations from our talented balloon artists that we had there. The Easter Bunny was available for photos. We had our local real estate, Remax Realter, Michael O'Motta. He sponsored that particular activity, and everybody got to walk away with a free print of themselves with the bunny, so that was a wonderful activity. Sam won Capastrano Chick-fil-A Cal, stopped by for a brief visit, handed out gift cards, and also gave us 300 cookies to hand out to everybody who came to the event. We had free hot dogs, free popcorn, bottled water. We also had Ortega Animal Care Center there, their first time participant. And they handed out free pup cups to all the dogs that were walking through or attended the event. And they also gave out free acrylic framed pet photos. You could just scan the photo of your dog from your phone. They did it right there on the spot and you got to walk away with something very cute. We are so appreciative for our friends, the generosity of South Coast Church for filling thousands and thousands of eggs for this particular event and for bringing out volunteers. And our community partners who made everything possible. So just a great day all around, beautiful weather, and we look forward to next year's event. Next update for you would be the LaSolla Auditorium. Very pleased to announce that our interior renovations at the LaSolla Auditorium are now complete. The space is available for special events and meetings. We had our first event there this past Saturday, so that was nice that they got to enjoy all the refresh of the building. The enhancements included the installation of new flooring in the auditorium as well as in the kitchen. We updated the lighting and the lobby. We have fresh paint throughout both the auditorium and the lobby. And we're finishing up some installation of cabinetry in the kitchenette and that should be done this week. So you can come on by and take a look at that some point. We'd like to show you the building. And then there'll be a new drinking fountain installed in the foyer. We're waiting on that net to be expected in the next coming weeks. And then lastly, a next renovation update. Lots of good things happening. At the TJ Meadows, formerly the Chamber of Commerce Building over at the old fire station complex. That facility is also getting a facelift and with new drywall throughout the building itself it's a very small little house but it's getting new drywall, fresh paint, updated lighting throughout, new plank flooring as well as other minor, interior interior and exterior improvements. And those are going on right now. Those should be complete within the next week or two. We'd love to show you that facility when it's complete as well. And that concludes my updates for events that have occurred up till now. And we look forward to providing you with a new report next month for all these summer events coming up. I'm here to answer any questions or take your comments. Do any commissioners have questions for staff or comments? I do. Commissioner Mondo-Hano. I wanted to take the time to say thank you to all the of volunteers and people who collaborated for the Swallows Parade and all the participants for the Swallows Parade and also for all the people who helped out with the spring strap against as well just hearing from you all the families that attended and the face painting and the donations from local vendors and stuff, that's nice to hear. And I have a question since I see that the skate park is, you know, the... It's being built and all of that. My question's gonna be, are we gonna have a that's going to be set up to avoid the soccer balls when players are playing the soccer field from the ball being kicked over while the facilities being used for skateboarding so nobody gets knocked out or the ball gets kicked on the other side, just a recommendation that I wanted to bring up to you guys' attention. Well, we can think about that. And then also just visiting some of the parks and stuff. I've noticed that the drinking stations come in handy, being at the Cooks Park field. And stuff, I see a lot of families that are using their bags or walking around. It's nice that they have those drinking stations. So I just want to see. Thank you for that. Thank you, Commissioner. I'd like to also, the spring of Stravagans is sounded great. And of course, the parade, I've talked part of the ways in it, but I've got to watch the whole parade this year at the point where Jim Taylor was the announcer and it was amazing. And of course, Kathy Holman is one of our honorary Lasfet cars, so we're all cheering her on as well as our writing club won a big award as did a couple of people. So it was really exciting. But I wanted to ask as commissioners, And I'd like to see if there's a way we could, and I'll volunteer, to assist with community services this term in communications. And somehow, especially with some of the elderly residents in our community, if there's a way we can get the messaging out for them about the services and variations. If there's anything that you think we could assist with that portion of it, please let us know. I'd really like to do that. And I'm hoping as we progress, we could continue with one of the items we worked on, which were some tours of the trails, and put that back into our commissioner, what do you call it, our little tours of the recreational facilities of San Juan. I think there's always time to re-look at some of the parks. I'm sure that, especially going into the new budget evaluation, there'll be some parks that at this point in juncture may need some attention. But if we could maybe Those are just two things I was hoping we could maybe add Address thank you for your time Down to me, okay I just had a quick comment on More so on events and like how you say we went to the spring or strand against have against events had a really good time with the family but my comment is more you know in general but that event was a great example of this is how much I appreciate keeping events and activities free for our community and you know and that event really did a nice job of that in terms of everything was free, right? All the activities, all the giveaways, all the food, the cookies and the hot dogs. And I know a lot of that has to do with the event sponsors. And so cultivating those relationships with the groups, the businesses, the people in our community that are willing to make that sponsorship happen adds a lot to not only the event but what we you know are building as a community and what the residents of Sam on Capastrano can expect going to an event like that. And I even had an interaction with someone just casually, not in any sort of like official capacity. As we were waiting in line to do a couple of these things and someone walked by and said, where do you get, where do you buy wristbands to do these activities? And I said, you don you just you just do it, you know And they were like wow, that's so cool And I think that's just like a really fun and Special part about having that community event And so I'd love to just continue to build that relationship with sponsors that allow that to happen because it doesn't happen without them right because The budget is this budget budget, right? And budget always is going to be a limitation to doing things. The other comment that I had was, thank you Heidi, for giving that update between the Swallow's Day Parade and the spring extravaganza because those are two sort of opposite end of the spectrum events. And I think that's also really neat that we can, our city in the Swallows Day Parade and bring so many people from outside of San Juan Capastrano and really demonstrate that culture and the type of community environment that we have here. But also have an event like Spring Extra Evagans that feels like that's for us. That know. That's for the community. That's for the people that live around here and the close, you know, live close by, right? And those are really two really neat parts of, you know, this is not a big city, right? This is a smaller city with resources that get stretched. But I think we still have that opportunity to really provide such great events and services that it's important to recognize the importance of both of those types of events, not that I think we want to do a bunch more swallowstapourates. But it is nice that we have that one and it's tied so closely to the past and the heritage of San Juan Capitano that it's really neat. Those are just my two comments on those events looking forward to a great summer and season of things coming up that I know we have planned. So thank you. That's all. I know a few of us shared some remarks. So on the off-chance that any commissioner would have some remarks to share. This is a great opportunity. I know I have one. This Saturday is a Unidos is the other Lino event. I am of the privilege of being the event coordinator at the local nonprofit here in San Juan Capastrano. This is their annual event. It is free to the city, free for the public. We invite 40 organizations to share resources pertaining to kids, pertaining to families. And so we have bouncy houses. It's a big invitation. It's all hosted by the Capastrano Village community. And so the residents there put on a really good show. So I'd love to see if you guys can come stop by. It'll be at Stonefield from 11am to 3pm. I'll make sure to post it on social media if that's a good outlet for you guys but it is a great turn out and just another great way of how organizations and on-profits residents are using our parks are really kind of taking a sense of ownership and responsibility in celebrating their community. So I'd love if you guys can stop by hang out. That's right this Saturday. This Saturday clear the calendar. And then one more thing I wanted to take the time to think the staff you guys always go above and beyond and thank you once again for everything you ladies do and don't think your hard work does not go unnoticed so thank you once again for everything. Yes, thank you. Moving on to staff remarks. Staff, do you have any remarks for us? None the same thing. Thank you. Now we may adjourn the meeting. The meeting is adjourned to Monday, May 19, 2025 at 5.30pm for the next parks, equestrian and community service commission regular meeting.
