And believe me, there was a lot of knowledge in music around here, but nothing approaches what we have now. And just think of what has happened since the mid-50s. We have Wolfgang, we have the Kennedy Center across the river. We have the Fairfax Art League, which was founded by a number of local citizens. We have the Jupe Fairfax Jubileeers, our barbershop, male barbershop group. We have the Fairfax Symphony, which is certainly among the finest orchestras of its kind in the country. And what was then the youth symphony? And it was very interesting that John Ferris is here tonight. His wife Penny was so instrumental in developing the, what was originally the Northern Virginia Youth Symphony, which is now the American Youth Philharmonic ensembles. Certainly here again something that grew up from people in this area and in the case of the Fairfax Symphony it was Dorothy Foyer who lived over there in the near of the North. over there, I can't think of the nearer than you are. And City Band was founded back in 1968 by Phil Fuller and Matt Hines. Both of whom had served as band directors. I think Matt was the band director then. And they each did a concert to those first two seasons. And I took over in 1971. I want to point out, I appreciate everything that John said. But under Bob Pouliott's direction, the band has become what it is today. I was fortunate enough to be in on the initial years of all that and have some wonderful people to work with. And the city has always supported the band. I think the first year year one was about $300 to pay somebody for conducting some rehearsals. It wasn't me, but it didn't matter. Somebody got that. But since then the level of support that the city council has shown the arts in the city is truly significant and especially this year when things have been so tight and we definitely appreciate it not only the band but all the rest of us. Then we have the course of George Mason University. If I sound a little prejudiced, it's because I spent 23 years on the faculty there. Unfortunately, Joe Canyon couldn't be here tonight. He's on the high seas somewhere on a cruise. And Joe has been very, very active in spotlight, developing the scholarship program. He was my boss, often on in the music department in Mason for many years and had a great deal to do with setting the foundation that James Gardner, who's here tonight, and Bill Reader, who's the dean of the College of Visual Performing Arts, are able to work with now. visual performing arts are able to work with now. Of course we are coming up in June. The festival is being put on by the theater of the First Amendment. So this is an exciting time to be in the arts in our area, believe me. Commission on the Arts was, I think, the brainchild of Glenn Smith, if I'm not mistaken. No, Glenn White. And Glenn conceived of this as a group that would support the Arts in the city. And I've been a member of that many years, but unfortunately, Jean A. G, who's really the heart and soul of the commission does not hear tonight. She's spending some very well-deserved time with her family. But without Jean, so much of what's happened in the arts in the city wouldn't have happened. And I hope that someday we can give her the recognition that she really deserves. And then we have the Academy at the high school. I think this occurred during Johns 10-year here. I mentioned the City Council of course. I guess those of us who have been aware of the budget, struggles and hearings and all that have been very aware of this whole thing. But our arts are growing, they're vital. This is somewhat unusual for a little city such as the City of Fairfax, I think. But it's taken a lot of creative ideas and a great deal of hard work and a lot of different talents. Ruth's talents have been putting up with me over the years when I've been engaged in some projects, but not always come to fruition, but so her contribution to the arts goes beyond our association with the band, which only Lyndon about two years ago. But we're just happy to have played the role in this whole thing. And I think you got to think that when you look back at what we've done since the early 50s, that this is really quite impressive. And it's just doubly impressive because so much of this has grown out of the city of FAFACS this residence. But I must say that from a very personal standpoint and I think I can testify to this, that the older you get, the more important the arts become to you. A lot of other things pass by the way when you get older, but the arts are always there. And I think this is, it's absolutely necessary that we keep the effort going to keep the arts alive in the city of Fairfax. And we wanna thank you for this great honor tonight and we were totally surprised to be asked and we're totally overwhelmed. But thank you. the city of Fairfax. It is a tradition that the mayor and the city council are presented with the annual spotlight poster to add to the collection that graces city hall. Could I ask mayor letter and the council members here if you could please come forward to be recognized and to receive the commission. I would like to thank the mayor for the support and support to the collection that graces City Hall. Could I ask Mayor Lutter and the council members here if you could please come forward to be recognized and to receive this year's poster? Great. From the time I was alive. Okay. Okay. Thank you. This year we're very pleased to acknowledge the contribution of our precious metal benefactors, platinum, gold, and silver. We'd like to start with our platinum contributors who not only step up to the plate, but they are the ones that hit spotlight home runs for us. I'd like to have John Mason join us again as we acknowledge our first platinum supporter and be here for a photograph. Let's start with our first platinum supporter which is BP and Tom Horn, a long time major supporter. And John, if you'll join us, we would like to really have you take as president of Spotlight to receive a really big check from BP. And this will make the BP scholarship, which exists, our second endowed scholarship, which is extremely important. And John, you might like to say a few words on that. You could probably hear me in the back of the room. I am particularly pleased to do this. This check in case you can't read it, is for $15,000. And this moves B.P. into the category of providing an endowed scholarship that Tom even passed you and me. This scholarship will be available for competitively for students in our area heading toward arch-related programs at George Mason University. Tom, you have done an outstanding job and BP has been so supportive. You know, there is a small world story here that Joanne Ormershire, our executive director, Spada Malin, the arts, actually went to school in the UK on a BP scholarship. That's right. So not only here, but in the UK, we went to school in the UK on a VP scholarship. That's right. So not only here, but in the UK, we're with scholarships. Tom, thank you so much. And go see. APPLAUSE We would like to recognize Cox Communications, who's platinum all the way. And again, Steve, thank you so much. Boy, I'll tell you, this is a good give and take. We get 15, we get some of this. I'll give it a try. Got it. That problem's bad. Thank you again. Next, a spotlight couple that's been platinum in so many ways and for so many years, a platinum John and Jeanette Mason. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not looking for a gentle stroll down Lovers' lane. No, no to cry, but just come for a ride On to our prayer A calm rally lines against ice, penny flows Gone here, but someone already knows that the world is successful You stop when it's long, it's really strong on the moon. But I'm running on. My small is small, let's try and find a stable combat, my best existence has, thin lost feet, full of tape rolls, and the cry of the straight lines. The lines, for me, are too white for the top right of our eyes. In our smart, heavy time, all the sweet lines, I pass on a breathtaking wide area of course, but I'm very pleased How my pride was born, give me a corn, baby, oh Give me a corn, baby, oh My corn, my baby, oh I want one more, I want one more. In the sun, oh, so it's not clear that sight, A wave of courage, a wave of freedom, A wave has turned, like the real boss, Like the real world that's created this whole world My love, real world I believe I am so blinded, gallantly near I'm a sweetie, I hear Riding the cups of eaves and the world With my crisis in me That's why I'm been lowing in fear Of the leaves, that's a beautiful promise I believe I've got to be your brother's friend in you, let me go in here and let you go in here show me glad that I'm tired of Show me, and let heart hold. Show me, all that's worthy gleam. But no risk is to grave. And no struggle's to deceive. And no battle's to draw. You're not allowed to dare. And I'm weak into wind can stop in dark mode Can't hide into the glory, can be what I know I have wanted to be And where this world hasn't seen what's beautiful or a wish and a world This heart that never bothered her would really never dare to escape the risk I've had in my eyes and I really have to face the near future I'm sorry, I'm not too lazy, be near, because you're one of the three of us. I'm sorry, here, that you're the song of us. our lives are ours Thank you. I'm going to be a little bit more careful. I'm going to be a little bit more careful.
