Here, me and Simon want to introduce you to one of my co-workers at 97.1 Wash FM radio. It's Maureen McLean, our midday goddess Highlorina. Oh, thanks so much Lou. So excited to be here once again for this July 4th parade, the City of Fairfax. And there's still time for you to come on by, bring your family family we've got dogs out here bringing kids we've got great food and the parade's gonna start in just a couple minutes so we'd love to see you down here for the city of Fairfax July 4th grade back to you Lilinda thank you more ring great to have you again as part of our activities today on this Fourth of July one of the many things that goes on in preparation of the parade and certainly I know you can think about this is the selection of a theme every year yeah we in preparation of the parade, and certainly I know you could speak about this. Is the selection of a theme every year? Yeah, we do. Every year the parade committee, which is called the Independence Day Celebration Parade Committee, puts out a feeler to the local schools, grammar school, elementary schools, and middle school, to come up with a theme for us to use during the parade and that theme is judged by the committee and Once winner is selected obviously every year and the competition is pretty tough every year We have had as many as a hundred suggested themes all of which of the fabulous and marvelous But we get stuff picket only one well this year's winner is Nicole B We're gonna show you about the theme this year with our parade. Enjoy this. This year's grand marmsel is a former Parage member, operate committee member, I should say, Norma Darcy, Norma who was active in our parade forever. She was also active in local politics, the garden club, the storage fair facts, and a just darling woman. Norma unfortunately passed away this past year, and everybody on the free committee misses her dearly. She's just a sweet lady. And her songs will be here representing her. She has three boys right? Yeah, she has three boys and a number of grandchildren. Got a lot of activities going on today, of course, besides just the fourth of July for a year. One of the things that I always look forward to every year is that the fantastic fireworks is played here at the Fairfax High School. Oh yes, that's always delightful. I just I love fireworks, so this is my thing. And the weather hopefully will hold out. I know there's a slight chance of some showers and thunderstorms later on today. A couple things to do keep keep in mind though, if you're gonna be going out there today, that the fireworks kick off. Roughly what about 9? 15? It's about 9.15, yeah. Right. If you're gonna be going to Fairfax High School and the stadium field, remember there's no smoking, no alcohol, of course. No animals of any kind, unless you have a guide dog. You see, wanna keep those things in mind, but you're welcome to certainly bring food if you'd like. They have vendors there as well that you can they also have special activities just for children. Right. They have all kinds of stuff going on. They have the city Fairfax band is always there. Yeah. The Fairfax band is is there every year. They provide entertainment before during and after the fireworks. It should be a lot of fun tonight at Fairfax High School. Don't forget that's the big, big fireworks display there. Also, other things going on today are the old-fashioned firemen's? Yeah, they have an old-fashioned firemen's competition. It's really hysterical to see, and the kids just love it, especially boys. Somehow, boys like to get wet. They almost always get wet. They have food and they have different activities for the kids at the fireman's picnic, which is directly across the street from the University of Ed and Firehouse. There's a little idea of what that looks like, too. what's like to. I'm going to see the fireman's event out there. By the way, kicks off today at 12.30. So if you want to check that out with your family, follow them and make sure you come on down. In addition, we have a cop's and kids on bikes at the Van Dyke Park, which is also very fun. They talk about bike maintenance and they have ice cream down there for anybody who shows up at that function. And Van Dyke is on only highway if anybody doesn't remember where it is. And by the way if you didn't get your bike tuned up, probably this spring or summer, you want to get that tuned up and have some light bikes that go maintenance down there as well today and that gets off today between one and three. If you want to check that out in the meantime we're back out to our parade route along Armstrong Street and Washington's Maureen McLean. Thanks so much, Lou and Linda. We are very excited that the parade is going to come by here in just a couple minutes. And have you been to the Fairfax Parade before? Yes, but not the several years now. You're out of town this time of year. Well, we're glad that you're here today. And are you looking forward to seeing the parade today? Absolutely. Fairfax does one of the nicest small town parades and the port of July is in the area. And we're so glad that you're joining us today. And make sure you come on out. It's going to be a great time. The weather is perfect. So take advantage of the wonderful parade we have going on here today, the city of Fairfax. Lew and Linda back to you. Looks like they're having fun out there along the parade route. Thank you more Rema claim from Washepham. I want to thank some of our sponsors who certainly do help us out every year on this including our friends with Virginia Lottery. They're proud to present the Fourth of July fireworks later on tonight. In fact since 1999 Virginia Lottery prophets have been used for public education here in the Commonwealth and also helping out kids from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. Yeah and of course as a person who's been involved in the parade for a number of years we love having wash FM 97.1 as a continuing sponsor here at the parade. Please check them out there on have a website obviously obviously washappm.com. Yeah, we have all kinds of stuff on our website. Yeah, I've seen it. It's really cool. Also, I want to say about the American Legion Post 177, one of our sponsors this year. They're located at 3939 Oak Street right here in the city of Fairfax. The American Legion Post 177 was led to the incorporation and charter in January of 1945 and we take them for helping us out every year. We also have other sponsors as well. COX Communications, who is the principal cable provider here in the city, who is, of course, where you're seeing us. And they deliver reliable broadband networking and superior customer care. Check out Cox Table, they're the best and the biggest in the country. And we're thrilled to have them. We're also again thrilled to go back out to Armstrong Street here on the parade route. More Reheuvie found for us now. Lou, I tell you, we have found a very patriotic dog. And what's his name? Max, and we're glad that Max is out here. You guys have in a good time so far. Yeah, absolutely. Well, well, we are going to, just a couple minutes we've got the parade and Max is going to be here. And he's going to be the mascot, Max the mascot. How's that for the city of Fairfax Parade? So hopefully you'll come join us here and we see some people are coming. So we're going to hit it off the parade. Thanks so much. Lou and Linda back to you. Thank you Thank you, Maureen. I could have sworn Max was asking for a funnel take a little bit. Was that true? Probably. I want a funnel. Okay. Well, we're here to tell you about the parade on city screen 12 and it is now starting to come around See momentarily they're gonna be coming up here on I'm sure You're right now the city of Fairfax Police Honor Guard. The Honor Guard is of course leaves off the parade here in the city. They were formed in 1978. And they're just putting on a little show in front of the Grand Stand, which is where all the the big materials will be coming soon. We have the color guard coming up the street right now. Yeah. There are... How did they do that with the motorcycle? I don't know. I suspect you have to be a professionally trained police officer to be doing this. I believe you're right there. I couldn't do it. That's for sure. And of course there are love, proud loves them because they're our own here in the city. City of Fairfax. And now you're seeing the color guard coming up on the farm street this morning. We actually have two color guards. One is the police color guard and the second one is the ballerine. Actually, the ballerine fires color guards. They need to be available to do their duties later on. The second one is the volunteer fire department. They need to be available to do their duties later on. That's why they come through so early. Which one of these colored arts Linda will be at the fire? I believe it's the fire department. I believe it's the fire department. And of course this. You got the city of the city chiefs car. He's out walking around the plant head and some of the car out. Absolutely. Casey just joining us is his live coverage on city screen 12 of our city of Fairfax 41st annual Independence Day parade with thrilled to have you along if you could make it out along the parade route. My name is Lou Katz, I'm from 97.1 Wash FM in our morning show. Linda Baringhouse is where this is here at Pearl Baha'i 2. They walk, you know, they don't even break a sweat. And not just the hotter sticky echoes. No, it's very delightful weather, matter of fact, for this parade. It's amazingly unusually comfortable. And here comes some of our volunteer fire department trucks as well. Again, they need to be early in the parade so that they can go out and do their jobs when necessary. There's a fire chief there at Dr. Cline. Right, there's a fire chief. And of course all the city's equipment comes out for this. And trust me when we tell you that they were out polishing their vehicles, it would be nice and shiny for the parade today. And of course the kids love it. Number 443, Italian tree, torn by her. They're the wave of an atom. four four three tie and treat or admire. Wait a minute. And of course, blaring their horns and sirens just to make sure that everybody pays attention to them. It's really wonderful to know too, by the way, that they are here to support you and your family just in case. Yes, just in case. Just in case. There is fight of everything they're on duty even as well. Absolutely. And they do do fundraiser certainly throughout the year. It's a end up coming by your house if you're seeing that your favorite strip shopping center in the city. And they're trying to collect money, give them what you can because it's great to know that they're out there covering you and your family. Yes, definitely. Definitely. That's great. Great. covering you with your family. Yes, definitely. That's great. So what do you say about what some ladders and ambulances that hasn't been said someplace along the line? And of course then we have, I see one of our riders we have bicycle cops and bicycle fire folks in the city. I see you can see them coming up along the way. Now you can see them along the areas. There's one of our REMS types that go out on bikes, depending on crowd conditions etc. What is their role? I support the normal firefighters that are in the building. Of course the normal firefighters, yeah, normal firefighters, when in fact there's a, you know, a big, perhaps a big trash, of course, track around where big trash is on, unheard of. But they just support them because they can get in and out quicker than say one of our bigger rigs here. Yeah, we have all kinds of apparatus. We have all kinds of apparatus. EMS fire rescue, they certainly do each other at all. They do cover it all. And they are of course supported by other votes. We have a support, a citizen support, a kind of cadre that also support them for some of this some of the you know it's kind of like disaster planning they do this disaster planning they are they addition is citizens support of this kind of firefighter additionally over and above the volunteers years. You can't help but think about those lost their lives and tragic fire. Can't help to think that well. Yeah, as they go by here. And you can't have Linda. The Fourth of July parade here in the city of Fairfax without Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam for a lot of years was provided to us by the American Legion post here in town. And it's still supported by these probably a Legion air. How old was Uncle Sam? He's 231 years old because that's our birthday. Something like that. 231 looks pretty good to me. Okay, we have some VIPs now coming up here. Yes, we definitely have VIPs coming up. This is Norma Darcy's son. Two of the sons are Brandon Marshall, as I said earlier, had passed. We are very, we were all very privileged and honest and no norma. Matter of fact, it's all free of her sons. just know you. I just know you're sitting up and yeah. Two honors that one is a past. Writing a shot. Yeah. And this is also a family of our our this is our honorary grandmaster. Look at the principal high school the local principals of high schools and grammar schools.
