You don't have to be young, you don't have to be a kid to know about Sesame Street. It's one of those wonderful programs that combines fun, music, and education, all in a realistic setting of daily life. In fact, it's now in its fourth decade and it's one of the jewels of American television with an international audience as well. And one of the human characters who has been with Sesame Street since the beginning is Baja. He has a longer name of course, but everyone knows him by that name Baja. In fact, around the world he's at a first name basis with kids of all ages. His professional life in addition to Sesame Street is busy, including musician, author, recording artist, spokesperson for important causes, and for more than 15 years, the host of the International Children's Festival right here at Wolftrapp. The Seabedon Bob McGrath is here to perform a City of Fairfax band premiere of the Sea Princess, a theater cabaret style setting of Hans Christian Anderson's story The Little Mermaid. It was composed for Bob McGrath with a small instrumental ensemble. Cabaret style setting of Hans Christian Anderson's story, The Little Mermaid. It was composed for Bob McGrath with a small instrumental ensemble. And the composer of that work was Seymour Barab. And at the concert which Bob Pugliott was at, Barab made a comment. He said, composers have two secret ambitions. One is to win a Pulitzer Prize and the other is to write musical theater. And this is my musical theater. And when Bob heard that performance and heard Bob McGrath do that performance, he said, I'd like to do that for the City of Fairfax Band and permission was granted and our own Bob Pooley-Octed The Arrangement for tonight's performance with the City of Fairfax Band. So we're looking forward to a wonderful piece of music with a wonderful collaboration. Ladies and gentlemen, please give a very warm welcome to our guest tonight, Bob McGrath. Thank you. I'm going to have to go. She was beautiful. She was a princess. She was the youngest of five sisters and the most beautiful of them all. Her name was Undine. Her home was a palace in the sea. A palace that was constantly growing and changing its shape. It was made of tiny living creatures called coral. And she was very happy there. When a child, her playmates were sea creatures, living jewels of all shapes and colors. She played it and hide and seek, and other games with them all day long. The father was Poseidon, called by some Neptune. He was the most powerful man in all the world, for he controlled the earth's weather. There were other monarchs of course, but they controlled nothing but their vizs and pieces of land. And where their land handled, there was silence remained to that. Undying did not speak. Her language was song, as is that of all Seedwothers. The story begins on our sixteenth birthday, that long away today that was celebrated by a party at which she would be given lovely gifts such as bouquets, water lilies, seavers, woven into crowns and rare sea shelves. But the real importance of the day was marked by this. She would be allowed to rise to the surface of her native element for the very first time. And enjoy the wonderful sights that land has offered, and her sisters being older had already done so. They had tasted the fresh ocean air and vast in the sun's warmth and seam ships and islands. But when she asked them to describe these wonders they could merely laugh and say As the snow questions will tell you no lies. When you want us to just wipe your surprise, you'll find it hard to believe your own eyes. So must these snow questions will tell you no lies. And laughing, they would swim out of her reach. Now however, it being her 16th birthday, she could sing back to her. When you went off to see the world, when your turn came to travel anywhere, to travel anywhere. Disciple and misread, did you still hesitate? Was the excitement to watch your way to there? When you went off to see the world? What made you think that you'd get wise somehow? You had so much to hear, so when it was your turn, were you as frightened as I am right now? Her mother, however, spoke to her sternly Wow! Her mother, however, spoke to her sternly of what she might expect in the world above. I give your innocence as soon to end. Its passing will course be more, but there are dangers in the other world, of which you must be warned. You will not be delighted by the humans, for all of us who sing their own accordion, that they are anti-social and uncivilized of asking very early. in the very other ring. So is it anyone? Is anyone here? Is anyone here? There will be no one in the scene. It's hard in those humans or sport, but any humans and often in the home are on superior regime. My darling, you can swim on the day you were born, and ability of human child life. Where will they begin life, they are helpless and blind, for one second they'll do nothing, but live on their backs, though, isn't anyone there? Is it anyone there? Is it anyone there Is it anyone, you're that weak? All the enemy of humanity! All day and all night, we are cleansed by the sea Where humans only blame once a week. So we are squeaky clean, our whole life long Don't get too close to them for they positively think so is it any wonder? Is it anyone though? Is it anyone that we are the enemy of humanity? I am of course aware you may think we are the, But I was smart to use the truth as this. That there is not a quiz, not a TV-weedy quiz, In all my heart, the rich and prejudiced. Our language has a lot into song down the years. It's an melody and rhyme that we speak. But humans still talk as their animals do, with a grunt and a squawk and a squeak. So is it anyone who? Is it anyone who? Is it anyone who left behind? All the envy of humanity! All the ethno-humanity. Now humans can accidentally end up there because they will smoke cigarettes in the van. But we know that her hand makes me proud that down here in the ocean smoking smoking snuff apart. So is an indivisible, indivisible, indivisible, and we dwellers in the sea, inspired by the most human, those poor with an excuse, and awful indivisible, horrible, indivisible, then her father said to her, Though I am a powerful king, ruler of all the world's water, Today I am just an average man Worried about his father. Your mother and I don't always agree But in this case I concur. Your mother understands humans well, I thank you to listen to your world. You can be clearer, slightier, so your vigilance must be praised, for the act which they fear, they try to destroy, I pray you avoid such a fate. They have missed their mark everywhere, no one knows how these tales arise, they are not a sin till a true for them. They are nothing but his eyes. Whenever a spailer drowns it's singing. It won't be very long. Before his shipwits are ready to swear, he was lured to his death by a sirens on. Sirens! As they call my precious children, calling them by that insulting name, but who and their sisters are all same names, are utterly free of pain. That is what one never fabricable lies, but the facts that prove another wise. A human's heart is confused with love, of a kind that he's never known. When he catches a glimpse of one of you, he wants you to be his alone. You try to catch a breath with his inner true, inner body, and when the last of his crevice is gone. On the ocean floor, here forever sleep, there are many of them on the ocean floor, and in time there will be even more. But that new cause or death is of all face wide. It's for an impossible long. That they've gone. The last of the party was over. The farewells have been said and the guests have departed. On Dean was ready to see what lay beyond her beloved home. It was night. Everyone knows that it's safer for C. Deweller's divisive land land after dark when they cannot be as easily discovered. When she rose to the surface, the first thing she saw made her gasp with the light. He was a scuder with two masks. The ship was brightly and the music was coming from it that was different from all from the only music she had ever known Which was the music of sweet she was curious about how this music was made She's when close to the ship and away carrying her to where she could reach a portal From which the light and the music were coming What she saw inside was like a fairy tale. The light was coming from beautiful crystal shambles, and the music was coming from instruments, which were being plucked upon, not voices. A strange answer to the progress, the dancers were paired up in couples and male and female, cover attention, but one particular answer young man, to whom everyone seemed to be saying difference. Although the other covers were changing partners, this young male always danced with the same one of the young female with golden hair. On the mistake of will and unfamiliar emotion, it was envy that she wanted to be that girl. She'd been watching the cinchanting scene before only a few minutes. When there was a tremendous crash. And she was thrown from the ship. We'd have run into a large rock hidden beneath the surface. There was something. And the moment in them among the passengers, wind and spring meant curse off her shoulder orders to the crew. Her young man came out of deck to assess the damage. At that moment, the boom of a mask in most of his bearing and started swinging wildly, knocking the young man overboard. She quickly swam to him and saw that he was unconscious and invading her of drowning. She grabbed her whole of his clothing and swam for the shore. Somehow she managed to get him onto the beach. She was waiting to see that he was bringing normally. She put his head on her lap and made him comfortable. The ship was now out of danger. She saw them searching the water for him and realized it was time for her to leave. Now the sun was rising. In the distance people were emerging from their houses to begin the days were. She sniffed quietly into the water before she'd be seen. Half the murky. She turned for one last lover, that the young man, and to her surprise, his eyes were open. He had seen her. She quickly swam away. All the way home, she delighted in the possibility of a handsome young human male being in love with her. She news herself. When one of them sees one of us, he follows her wherever she goes, like that he says, and that he knows. Well, one of them who has a girl has seen me now and once means that my family knows that's what he said. If one of their kind lives is one of our kind, he will never get her out of his mind. So he may die for love of me, and that's how it must be, I suppose. My daddy said, and that he knows. How did she try it? She could not put the young man of her mind. She told herself she was worried about him. He loved her with a hopeless love and might do something foolish to resolve. But gradually she came to realize that she longed to see him again. She longed to feel the joy she had felt on the beach gazing at his hands and face. Days passed, she became more and more dejected. Nothing could have used her. She was inconsolable. Her mother sang to her. The olive, you will embrace. You seem to be growing something. You are too eating or sleeping at all. Is there some kind of trouble you're in? I'm your mother. I'm right to know. Tell me My dear, what's bothering you so? Hounding began, there's a boy Her mother interrupted is that one that's the matter with you Just across your drawing through Mother, I think I'm in love. What happens above your only sixteen? What can you possibly know about love? Nothing but father. Can you tell me why? I feel like I'm going to die. Don't worry about that, my dear. Though a feeling of love may feel you. Even if it may hurt a bit, believe me, child. It's not going to kill you. Now about that boy. I feel you. Now about that boy. Well, I'm sure he's sweet. But how long have you known him? And where did you meet? Mother, he's a human. Oh, that's nice girl. What? A human? But I get in here this very instant. And when the sign appears, I know that you had problems by the scorer. So I hate to burden you with it one more. Like a quandary has a vision I was mentioned, that requires your opinion as attention, as far as all those troublesome affairs are stated. Where such trivialities will have to wait. How I pray your sin was to prevail. Cos when this is one time that you must not fail. Because my dear you see, it's an emergency. The worse that there could be. A king is in love with a real man who can pay you. A king is in love with every guy you can pay! Was heightened was enraged. He stormed, lost, and spreaded. Then he art, demonstrate, flee, and heal. All to no avail. I was in love with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you, with you so much to do with you. The trouble is I just thought no. Time passed and her health began to be affected. The queen sang to Poseidon. Is it possible, every, a king and queen, who are thought to be powerful and brave? Can I think of some way to help our child? Why fear it would soon be to delay? There must be something we forgot to try. Now I'm starting to believe that when all the human are childhood language, Satan and I. The silence voice will stand as you reply, then. Yes, I think of those bodies that on the sea floor are strewn. died for impassable love, a love led to their ruin. Then, a thought occurred again. Suddenly, he remembered the subject of his who was believed to have magical powers. He sent forward with instructions that she be taken directly to the princess. She was a charming creature. She signed to the princes. Your highness went summoned by royalty. Would I think it only fit me that I comply so here I am ready to do your bidding. But who are you? As the princess. Yes, go by him and die every time. I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a whore, I'm not a wh which, I know which, I know which. Not just any own problem of all which. But you're friendly, everhood, and which. At the last your futures looked in bright. Of course, I am here to set things right. I'll incantate a special smell. That if you're sick, wouldn't make you well. Or if you're hungry, and make this supper. Because I know words for most here are offer. And if you need someone's discretion and it's mercy me, you will see. You can always go to me, because I'm a witch, I'm a witch! Not just any old, raw, nongo witch, but your friendly neighborhood of witch. No, then you're heinous. To prove that I'm the best, you must think of something difficult and put me into the test. I will try to do whatever I can for you can read me in the wish, then is there just the slightest chance that you could make it possible? Yes, that you could make it possible for me to dance, dance, but see people dance all the time in a most wonderful natural way. Sing to nice women is what's common for her while others delight in a panthequette. The prince is saying, I, a condensed to a white who, Being danced to by tune, as human beings do. A boy will hold a girl real close, The white-o-late to withstand the world. Sometimes you'll in the morning quite fast and sometimes slow. I wonder how it feels to tap your toes and stamp your heels. I'll do that someday. What since that's what you want? Then what I will do is grant your wish as I promise to. What I fear my dear, that you're acting in haste. On the other hand, there's no accounting for taste. Then you think you can do it. Of course, there's nothing to it. Don't forget, if your talents as they do, you're going to have to swim the way they do too. So which would it be, legs or ten? Choose your highness, it's up to you. There's not the slightest doubt in my mind, I'm taking the legs if you don't mind. Then I shall have to dissolve your tail, which in water allows you to smoothly fly. I'll recase it with a pair of legs, on which you'll lurch from side to side, I don't care. I want so much intense and walk and run through. As soon do you think it can be done. Of sure, anytime at all, I can't be afraid of that last, my dreams come true. And is there some way there beyond price, but if you still insist right now, a I'd be saying, the day when I become a human being. What? You are human being, you'll be nothing of the kind. Whatever foot that silly notion to give your mind, but then you just say, give me thanks. And you thought that's an order but take? Don't you know that frogs have legs? It's sort of cramps were gonna say, and crocodiles and crawls, and they're not human beings, as far as anyone knows what you said that they would make you human. Which realized that she was being disrespectful to her while personage and quickly changed her tune. Your Highness, I'm afraid you misunderstood the truth is I only wish that I could but I'd have to create a soul for you. And that's the one thing I cannot do. A soul, what's a soul? Let me explain, you and I, and all sheep, you and I, eventually die. But we remain in the seers' home, Forever a flow of the waves we call home. Where as humans have souls and souls, There's a place in the sky where the salt goes A heaven where they live happily through our bodily journey I know you're disappointed but but so am I for you, see? I must admit to having a limited ability, Hope you and I had hopes that were too high. For it gives me your highness, and now I'll say in good-bye. She made her way out of the palace leaving behind a most unhappy princess. But the very next day, the witch return. Very excellent. The swimming is fast as she does on the way. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm hard-tired. You'll never guess who I meant to today. Who I meant my way to call it, some ocean reenamy. When right there suddenly, who should I chance to meet, swimming right in front of me? What the teacher, who gave me my degree, a professor at the college that I went to. My alma mater, who do you? He's a genius. There's one thing this wizard can't outdo. It's so important that I have to tell him all about it. I'm really saying the princess. Why not really see? Why such a man is that? Would have been interesting. So just let me catch my breath away and I will try to make it clear. The professor is searching for a voice. He needs the very best. I assure him that yours is a word. And what could and him to his class. Thank you, Santa Princess. I'm very flattered, but I am not a professional singer. Oh, he doesn't need a singer. He needs a voice. What do you mean? The proof as a result of the love is child and man. The poor thing has a fliction for which a pure was found She was born without a larynx, How terrible, not entirely It may prove to be a struggle Surely a bargain can be struck A voice or so is the way it will all, a perfect example of quid and pro quo. Gosh, you say the princess, I don't know what to say. Your highness, say the witch, you don't have to decide right away. Tomorrow it knew he will give you a test. A test. What kind of test? Well now the professor wants things to turn out for the best, instead of for the worst. So in order to put his fears to rest, he'd like to audition you first. The next day at noon, the princess sang for the professor. Afterward, he sang to her. It's a nice voice, the wind wobbles just a bit, but it shows trumps. I think I can work with it. words with a magic spell and while I'm unknown I should give you your Will your voice give me a soul? Oh, no, my dear, we must take care. Oh, soul requires more than a spell. It requires a prayer. I'm Dean returned home to find her parents' sisters and tears, which had already been there with news of her decision to become a human. However sad they were at having her to part, they were heartened by Unding's confidence in her future happiness, and wished her well. This is how she bathed by two her loved ones. I was saved farewell. I long to stay. I remember the far distant world that I go to is only inches away. And off she swam to the professor's house. When she waken from the professor's magic spell the next morning, she was lying on the beach where she had last seen the boy she loved. She quickly looked out at her legs at her own beautiful, shiny new legs. She counted her clothes. They were ten of them. She laughed with joy, or rather she tried to laugh, but no sound came out. Now she realized the first time that never again would she laugh or sing. But that didn't matter. Soon her beloved would find her and together they would happily walk, run, dance, and even swim together. She had no regrets. She had some difficulty standing and walking was about the same as walking on stills. But humans had learned to do it and so would she. Then she heard a voice. I knew you'd come back. She turned, and there he was standing before her. Every day I came to this spot. It's where I last saw you swimming away. I tried to find him, but couldn't. Still, I wished very hard that you'd come back and my wish is granted. I love you. She nodded and smiled happily. He was disappointed. He said that I was hoping you'd say you love me too. She nodded more vigorously. You do? I'm so glad because I want to marry you. She was nearly bursting with happiness. Then he took her home to meet his parents. Home was a palace even randered than her own. And his parents were the king and queen. He was a true prince. And even her mother would have to admit that he was worthy of her hand in marriage. She was paid many compliments but wasn't able to answer the many questions they asked. She was treated as an honor of guest and felt that she was already a member of the family. One day in her absence, the prince's parents told him their true feelings. This girl's refusal to speak was his most disrespected, with peace she tried to hide with her silence. How can we allow you to marry a girl about whom we know absolutely nothing. I know all I need to know. I know I love her. That's not enough. You are a prince of royal blood. You have an obligation to continue the succession to the throne, who is a person of royal blood, who is this girl? Where is her family? What is her standing in the social order? I don't care about all of that. She saved my life. Oh, you guess we know she's baby from the surrounding world. We're eternally grateful for that. But we would gladly reward her in any way she desires, but she knows nothing of quarterly behavior and of humor. She has offered her with a physical grace of any kind. She can neither read nor write why the poor child cannot even tell us her own name. My dear boy, unless we learn more about her, we must get her to be unsurpassed for marriage into her royal family. Though woman you marry must be a genuine princess, this world will be coming between of a future king and the mother of his tragedy. The prince was heartbroken, but he could not define his parents. On Dean Ming-Wil, went along in the expectation that the prince would marry her. But slowly she was coming to the realization that no date had been set for the wedding, nor were there any arrangements being made for one. In her world, a royal wedding was in occasion involving many weeks of planning. She began to fear that her mother was right about humans, that they did not keep their promises. His fear was realized when a guest came to stay at the palace. She was a beautiful young girl with golden hair on him. Undine recognized as the very one prince had been dancing with the board of the ship when she had first seen him. She learned that this girl was the daughter of a neighboring king. I'm deemed then new for a certainty that the princess parents had chosen someone else to be his bride. Now he was spending more and more time with the golden hair girl, and less and less time with her. But every time she saw him, he appeared sad, which led her to believe that he still loved her as much as ever. There was nothing she could do but went all for. She did not know what hall for. At last, the date of the wedding was announced to break public rejoicing, but it was not her wedding. It was theirs. One day she went to her favorite place on the scene. A shady cove under a willow tree and found her sisters there, waiting for her. They sang. How pale you seem, oh sweet ending, a frail you seem, if only you would speak. You tell us what to do, we're so afraid of failing to be of any help to you. And we held to you. We went to the witch and pleaded with her To please put things back to the way that they were. We said we wanted you home with your family. We wanted you back as you used to be. She said you got your wish. You're as you hoped to be. And you want to do a wish come true. Here's me on your cross of your waiting. We listen to her, they decided to reply. We knew she could do it, if only she tried. We said it wasn't a mistake that you went to fall. And now you're unhappy with things as they are. She said she understood, and paper that's may have begun, But in this case, the fact with faith Is being left like a star in time. We try to describe your heart broken signs We told her you always have tears in your eyes We said, no semen's cry, not ever before, and we can't bear seeing you cry anymore. She said that now you're human, you must be now in them, it was short gone, to a half of a summer, And there's no glory left again. Before leaving, her sister's promised to return soon, but on Dean knew she would never see them again. The wedding took place on the royal school. On Dean was among the guests, before the ceremony took place. She went out on the deck and making sure not to be seen. She quietly slipped overboard. She allowed herself to sink into the deep. And when the last verb breath was gone, Her body lay on the ocean floor, joining those others who had died for an impossible love. She was not missed until much later. It was assumed that she had gone back to her home wherever that might be. In truth, she had gone back to her home wherever that might be. In truth, she had gone back to her home. For her soul, heaven was not a place in the sky. It was a place in the sea where worship had grown up. It was a palace that was constantly changing and growing and changing its shape, a beautiful palace made of living creatures called coral. And she was very happy there.
