WELCOME/INTRODUCTIONS (AGENDA ITEM I) Chair Caroline Zucker, School Board of Sarasota County (SBSC), called the meeting to order at the Suncoast Technical College (STC) at 9:10 a.m. and welcomed the attendees to the Convocation of Governments (COG) Meeting. March 2016 Suncoast Technical College (STC) hosted first annual Haas HTEC Florida Conference, and Gene Haas Foundation donated over $40,000 in funding and equipment January 2017 37 students currently enrolled Program Outcome Expectation: 100 graduates in five years Current graduates: 96 total in four years 5. UPDATE ON JOINT-USE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARKS AND SCHOOL FACILITIES (AGENDAI ITEM V) Director Carolyn Brown, Sarasota County Parks, Recreation, and Environmental Resources, and Director Kathie Ebaugh, Sarasota County Schools Planning Department, came before the Commissions and Council. Ms. Brown displayed a PowerPoint presentation on the overhead projector and stated that the schools and the parks have opportunities to share resources, improve services, and strengthen partnerships by working together; that the schools and parks have: The rich history of working together and can build upon past successes and collaborations Opportunities to expand partnerships by updating the School-Parks Interlocal Agreement Opportunities for future shared investments by improving park and school facilities through collaborative initiatives Ms. Brown continued that some past successful collaborations have included schools at County-Owned andlor maintained parks, and agreements and partnerships; that the current Interlocal Agreement: Has been responsive to community needs Provides an array of opportunities Has resulted in collaborative project teams Is transparent and provides easily fulfilled agreements Results in an understanding of the roles of schools and parks Sarasota BCC Commissioner Hines stated that seeing this collaboration come together is exciting, especially since everyone present represents the same taxpayers; that he looks forward to reviewing and having the Interlocal Agreement implemented. Discussion ensued about safety at the schools, possibly having restrooms installed outside as the result of children being outside for gym classes, and the School Board partnering with the County on funding. Venice Mayor Holic stated that he too is glad to see the collaboration between the School Board and County; however not having the cities involved is rather disappointing since there are schools within city limits and wondered if they would be overlooked, or if the process will have to begin again. 6. HOMELESS STUDENTS (AGENDA ITEM VI) Superintendent Lori White, Sarasota County Schools, came before the Commissions and Council, and stated that information was collected as part of the State's requirement; that federal dollars are received as the result of having homeless students; that a total of 867 students were homeless in the year 2016, in addition to 238 children between the ages of zero to five. Superintendent White continued and explained how homeless students are defined, and stated that these students generally live in temporary housing such as motels or reside with another family; that the School Board has a contract with the Sarasota Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) for "School House Link" which provides for tutoring, after school and summer enrichment programs, along with a variety of other services including specialized transportation for a student to remain at their home school.
