Application No. 24-CW-07 FREEDMAN Consulting & Development LLC To: Meeting Attendees Date: May 15, 2024 From: Joel Freedman, Freedman Consulting & Development, Applicant's Agent Subject: Summary ofl Minutes-Community Workshop April, 4, 2024, 5:30 pm A community workshop was held to discuss a Major Conditional Use and Site Plan application to permit construction of a new Youth Education Building for the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program (SYS) on the Sarasota Sailing Squadron's leased property, located at 1717 Ken Thompson Parkway. The Sarasota Youth Sailing program began in 1980. This new building will replace an existing storage building currently being occupied by the Youth Program. The subject property is owned by the City of Sarasota and leased by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. The 6.2 +/- acre property (PID# 2008030003) is zoned G- Government. The new 2-story building will have approximately 2,000t s.f. of air-conditioned space on the second floor. This space will be used for meeting space for the youth offices, bathrooms, and some storage rooms. There will be non-air- conditioned/covered space on the first floor POFRPL building for boat and equipment storage, circulation, etc. Approximately 1,000 s.f. of momairvomitionedcoverd space will also be on the second floor. The program's operating hours vary with the season ofthe year. For the spring and fall race seasons (January - April and September - mid-December) the days and hours are Tuesday = Thursday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the summer season (June August) the program runs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are 50 to 75 children in the regular season and approximately 200 children for the summer camp program. Age of the children ranges from 5 to 19. There are 10 weekly staff members, 5 on-call coaches and 12 to 15 summer camp staff. Approximately 20 regular volunteers also assist. Below are the non-verbatim summary minutes oft the discussion: Questions/Comments Responses I am a Lido resident and really support the Sailing Squadron; The new building will hopefully encourage more youth to join and take up will this increase membership or number of regattas? Wel hope sailing. It will also show new investment by the Squadron which may it does. support the Commission granting an increase in the lease term for the Squadron. What is your opinion of the Ride Entertainment proposal? We are just learning about the proposal and the Squadron has not provided When you have a regatta you require a lot of parking area and us with a formal position statement. They want to stay on the property and won'tt the new use conflict? therefore hope that whatever happens will not impact the Squadron being able to stay and operate. This meeting adjourned at 5:45 pm.
