Geldbart Auditorium 1331 1st Street Sarasota, FL. 34236 Contact: Joel Freedman Freedman Consulting & Development, LLC 1527 Second Street Sarasota, F134236 (941) 780-2623 A community workshop is being held to discuss a Major Conditional Use and Site Plan application to permit construction of a new Youth Education Building for the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program (SYS) on the Sarasota Sailing Squadron's leased property, located at 1717 Ken Thompson Parkway. The Sarasota Youth Sailing program began in 1980. This new building will replace an existing storage building currently being occupied by the Youth Program. The subject property is owned by the City of Sarasota and leased by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. The 6.2 +/- acre property (PID# 2008030003) is zoned G - Government. The new 2-story building will have approximately 2,000t s.f. of air-conditioned space on the second floor. This space will be used for meeting space for the youth program, offices, bathrooms, and some storage rooms. There will be onaironditimaleoverd space on the first floor of the building for boat and equipment storage, circulation, etc. Approximately 1,000 s.f. of non- aironditionedlcovered space will also be on the second floor. The program' 's operating hours vary with the season ofthe year. For the spring and fall raçe seasons and - (January April September mid-December) the days and hours are Tuesday - Thursday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the summer season (June - August) the program runs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are 50 to 75 children in the regular season and approximately 200 children for the summer camp program. Age of the children ranges from 5 to 19. There are 10 weekly staff members, 5 on-call coaches and 12 to 15 summer camp staff. Approximately 20 regular volunteers also assist. The SYS hosts four Regattas annually. The Zoning Code (2002 Ed.) of the City of Sarasota requires that all applicants hold a Community Workshop prior to filing a formal application with the of Sarasota if one more requesting or of the following applications: Conditional Use; Rezone; Street/ROW Vacation; "G" Zone Waiver; Amendment to the Future Land Use City Illustration LU-6 ofthe Sarasota City Plan; Amendments to the textofthe! Sarasota City Plan that affect as specific andl limited area ofthe City (as determined' by the Director ofthel Map ofNeighborhood and Development Services); day care facilities with more than ten children in certain zone districts; utilization ofGolden Gate] Point alternative. Department and/or certain standards, development projects within the Laurel Park Overlay District (LPOD) and North Trail Overlay District (NTOD). The meeting is to inform neighboring owners, residents, and business owners of the nature of the proposed development, explain the site plan, ifany, solicit suggestions and identify concerns; prior to the filing property ofa formal development application. This meeting will be conducted by the applicant or their representative; however, a member of the City of Sarasota' 's staff will be in attendance to address administrative questions. An additional Community Workshop shall be required if: an increase is proposed to the height, density or intensity of an appliçation occurs following the Community Workshop; previous an amendment is requested that requires action by thel Planning Board or City Commission; and/or an: application is not filed within 12 months following the previous Community Workshop. Once a formal application is filed with the City of Sarasota, property owners and registered neighborhood associations within 500 feet ofthe subject site will be notified of any public hearings held ast the application proceeds through the Development Review Process.
