Sugar Mountain Police Department POLICE 251 Dick Trundy Lane Sugar Mountain, North Carolina 28604 RGEE THE ILLAGE OF 6 (828)898-4349 CCDITEINE chief@seesugar.com Chief Casey Turbyfill REPORT TO VILLAGE COUNCIL May 14, 2025 All Police Department operations are operating as normal. Sugar Mountain Police Department has made a conditional offer to Timothy Kiefer for our open position. Timothy Kiefer has completed many steps in the process for recertification with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards. Timothy Kiefer worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department for 14 years before leaving Law Enforcement for a career in the public sector. Chief Turbyfill and Officer Brown are working to finish all documentation and paperwork to submit to the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards. Ihope Timothy Kiefer will be sworn in as a Sugar Mountain Police Officer soon. Once sworn, Timothy Kiefer will complete field training and be assigned to the night shift. Officers have been working to slow traffic down in the Village. Several motorists have received warnings for speeding infractions; State citations are also being issued. I want to ask all motorists to drive safely on Village Streets; many pedestrians are out enjoying the beauty ofthe Village. The speed limit on Grouse Moor Drive and Sugar Mountain Drive is 25 MPH and 15 MPH on all other side streets. Firearms in-service training will be completed next week for all full-time officers. This year, SMPD completed firearms in-service training with Avery County Sheriff's Office; in the past, all officers completed firearms in-service on the same day. This year, SMPD split the training up into three (3) separate dates to ensure no loss in coverage. Ihave no major incidents to report. We have had numerous calls about vehicle vandalism throughout the Village. Officers have conducted investigations into these events and found that the populations ofblack bears are becoming more active with the warmer weather. The bears are opening vehicle doors and entering vehicles. I ask that everyone be mindful of what is left inside their vehicles. Patrol Miles: 4,526 Business Checks: 514 Residence Checks: 416 Included with this report, are our monthly calls for service for your review.
