Luzerne County Council Tuesday, May 13, 2025 To all Luzerne County Council Members, We are Alliance to Stop the Line, a grassroots effort opposing PPL's proposed 500kV power line with 200' high poles, citing concerns over defacing the Sugarloat/Nescopeck landscape, lowering property values, posing possible health risks, environmental degradation, and increased electric costs/rates to local residents, just to mention a few items. We also understand that this line is primarily to provide power for large developer and large tech industry needs, with little to no local benefit to residents of Luzerne County, though we will be directly and permanently affected. While we certainly understand the need for increased grid capacity amidst burgeoning energy needs, we believe that these objectives can be met in a fair and ethical manner, including and considering ALL stakeholders, not just the large companies. To date, several local municipalities have pledged to oppose this transmission line through the passage of resolutions. To that end, we are calling for Council to take action on the following items: 1) We are requesting a meeting with all Council members regarding this urgent matter. It is of great importance to over 1,200 residents and counting (a growing petition) who vigorously oppose this proposed development. We welcome you to visit one of the places PPL intends to install this 500kV line, and give you a tour to understand the full scale of the project. 2) We are requesting language be passed in the form of a resolution that protects the rights of the private citizens of this County from the proliferation of transmission lines and unchecked data center development. 3) We are requesting Council Members to review and revise "by-right" zoning measures along with Luzerne County Planning & Zoning, to ensure up to date regulations that ensure ethical and responsible development practices. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
