CITY OF SCHULENBURG SCHULENBURG, TX February 10, 2025 The City Council of the City of Schulenburg met in a Workshop on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 4:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers located at 607 Upton Avenue, Schulenburg, Texas. The elected officials present included Mayor, Connie Koopmann, Alderwoman, Kathy Kleiber, Aldermen, Greg Thomas, Frank Wick III, Roger Moellenberndt, and Clarence Ahlschlager. City Staff present were City Administrator, Tami Walker, Operations Manager, Darryl Moeller, Projects Coordinator, Glenn Polasek, Water Supervisor, Darren Redding, and City Secretary, Mason Florus. Visitors included Darrell Vyvjala of the Schulenburg Sticker. Melissa and Barry Shepard, Nancy Brenek, Hannah Mica, Jamie Schramek, Caitlyn Herzik, Erin Wotipka, Lisa Goodlander, Ona Marak, Kristi Marak, Renee Mikesky, and Maria Camacho. Jamie Schramek stated that the main reason representatives from the swim team were in attendance is to determine if they could have a season or not. She added that the swim team is willing to contribute financially. Mrs. Walker addressed the room saying that as of this last Friday, it was determined that the current pumps do not adequately pump to meet code. In addition, the fact that the City still uses chlorine gas is also against code. Mrs. Walker said the City of Navasota is going through a similar ordeal with their public pool. They hired a consultant firm to design a new pool and contact contractors. Mrs. Walker reached out to the City of Navasota and the consultants would cost the City between $6,000 and $10,000. The three new filters the City would need to meet the in code turnover rate are $17,000 each. Mrs. Walker continued that there were plans to pursue a Texas Parks and Wildlife Grant to improve Wolters Park (including the pool). However, the City scored poorly because we have an outdated park plan. Also, once the issues at City Hall arose, the grant was put on hold. Mayor announced that due to the safety concerns, the pool would not be open this year. The future of the pool is still up in the air. Lisa Goodlander expressed that she wishes the Sharks would have known sooner, the City could have reached out to combat costs. Mrs. Walker replied that we didn't have the information about the pool not meeting code until last Friday. Mrs. Walker continued that she reached out to Shimmering Waters here in Schulenburg a couple of years ago. With the City doing the demo, a new pool with new plumbing, decking, and a filled in deep end would cost around $350,000. Alderman Thomas stated that " we will get the pool up and running, just don't know when." Although the pool would be shut down this year, there's no reason that it can't be opened again down the road. Erin Wotipka recommended putting together a committee to explore funding options. Mayor Koopman said that she would love to serve on the committee. She asked for another Council Member and four of the individuals in attendance tonight. Mrs. Walker said that realistically, it's probably too late to apply for a Texas Parks and Wild Life Grant this year since the applications are due in August. However, if the committee is formed now, the team could begin brainstorming. Alderman Wick stated he would serve on the committee. Mayor asked that the citizens give her about a week, and she'll reach out to members to look at dates for potential meeting times. Alderwoman Kleiber thanked everyone in attendance, and asked for patience, as this will be a big undertaking. Mayor Koopmann closed the workshop at 5:13.
