By, Shacey Grigg My name is Shacey Oliver-Foust, and am 23 years old. would like to share how my husband's journey in the military has shaped our lives and how this scholarship can help me pursue my dreams alongside him. I am pursuing an education at Paul Mitchell Arkansas School for Hair, but to truly understand my story, we need to go back to 2022. That year my husband, Brandan M Oliver-Foust joined the Marine Corps at just 21 years old. Our story began in 2018 when I was only 16 years old. Little did I know back then that he would become the love of my life. We both came from humble beginnings, starting with nothing but each other. Ever since we were 17 and 18 years old, we have been building our lives together. He graduated from public high school in 2019, and soon after, we discovered we were expecting a little bundle of joy. Our journey has been filled with love, challenges, and growth as we embraced young parenthood and the military life. Iwas homeschooled through James Madison High School, an online, self-paced program. With raising our family and supporting ourselves from such a young age, school wasn't always my top priority. When my husband proposed in 2018, neither of us could have imagined where our future would take us. By April 2022, when he left for boot camp, found myself facing the reality of raising our 3-year-old son, often feeling like I was doing it alone. Ity was a difficult challenge, but we persevered. My husband went through the rigorous demands of Marine Corps training while focused on raising our boy and working to support our family. Eventually, we moved from Arkansas to California, and life started to come together like pieces of a puzzle. Our son started transitional kindergarten, and Ia accomplished something wasn't sure I'd ever achieve I graduated from high school! That sense of accomplishment lit a fire in me, leading me to discover my passion for hair and enroll in cosmetology school. It's all I can think about, and it's giving me a sense of purpose and direction. When my husband received his orders for his first deployment in February 2025, we made the difficult but necessary decision for me to return to Arkansas. With him away, having the support of my family to help with our son was the best decision for our family. It allows me to focus on my education and create a stable, loving environment for our son while his father is away serving our country. What Does My Partner Being in the Military Mean to Me? It means the world. It has provided my husband, my son, and with the stability we always dreamt of. Our lives may seem like they were built in reverse living together at 17 and 18 years old, having a child at 18 and 19 years old, getting married at 20 and 21 years old, moving to California at 21 and 22 years old, and our child starting Transitional kindergarten at 5 years old. I graduated high school at 23 years old, in January 2025. These milestones are the foundation of our story, and the Marine Corps has been a guiding force through it all. The Marine Corps has molded my husband into a man that I am incredibly proud of. He has always been strong and hardworking, but his time in the Corps has only amplified these traits. He is now more disciplined and selfless than ever before, showing persistent dedication not just to his family but to his country. The United States Marine Corps has instilled in him a sense of compassion and self-awareness that only comes from being part of something greater than oneself. He faces challenges head-on, remains present in every moment, and approaches life with a strength and resilience that inspires me every day. Watching this transformation in him has shown me just how much the Marine Corps demands and how much it gives back in return. Iti is not just a job or a career, it is a lifestyle and a commitment. My husband has sacrificed for us, our son, and now our nation, and I am grateful beyond words. The Marine Corps has given us a chance to build a life from nothing, and every step forward feels like a tribute to the hard work and dedication he has shown. As I continue my journey into cosmetology school, Iknow our storyis still unfolding. Whether our next chapter leads us to California, North Carolina, or somewhere entirely new, I am awaiting with excitement and anticipation. The Marine Corps has taught us to embrace the unknown, find strength in one another, and trust the journey ahead. We are not just a family, we are a Marine Corps family, a bond that is truly unbreakable. The friendships that we have built along the way have transformed strangers into family, creating a supportive network that makes the challenges of moving around sO much easier. Having this extended family means the world to us, turning each new place into a home. Iflam honored with the Robert D. Ming Memorial Scholarship, I will use the funds to support my education, purchasing cosmetology books and my kit. It would be an investment in our future, helping me build a career that supports my family while my husband serves our country. No matter where this journey leads us, knowwe will face it together. For that, I am endlessly grateful for the beautifully messy life we share. What does your parent being in the military mean to you? When you're sitting in the passenger seat of your mother's car, you can only hear "Never marry a military man" sO many times. Following the years I learned the reality ofmy Army veteran father; I have listened to the same stories about him: how he was stubborn, too prideful, and rarely home. For someone who would have rather been on a deployment than see me, I never heard from anyone other than himself about the good he did for the country. By the time I was thirteen years old, my faith in him had crumbled, and all I could see when I pictured my father in the military was a reminder of disappointment and deception. However, my perspective was forced to shift when my stepdad swore into the Navy. Like many children in a difficult situation, there would be weekends when I was traded in a gas station parking lot to visit my father's side oft the family. It was thanks to my mom showing three-year-old me pictures ofhis face that I never forgot him. Those weekends, I was ecstatic to see him. I loved the glimpses into the job he seemed SO passionate about. My father was a sniper for the Army stationed in Texas, SO when I got to watch endless videos ofhis training drills, or when he (safely) showed me his weapons, or even watching him flash his military ID to get into base, I was filled with this admiration for him not just as my father, but as a soldier. I admired what he represented and the military as a whole- structure and strength. For anyone, it's never easy to accept that the flaws of a person you look up to outweigh the good in them. In my case, it ended up being the final push I needed to accept that he wasn't meant to be a constant presence in my life. The military ID and memorabilia I once stared at for hours were now tainted with sour memories, doomed to collect dust in the back ofa drawer. I had expected to stay committed to my newfound beliefs and to keep my distance from anything military-related. Even SO, one blink later, and I was in San Diego, California, at fifteen, on orders from my stepdad's Command. With my stepdad deciding he would join the Navy, I found myself in a minor dilemma, one that challenged the perspective I had carefully constructed. He had been there for my family for as long as my mother had been divorced, he was the reason I never had to fantasize about what having a dad was like. He was at my sixth-grade orchestra concerts, at the dinner table every night, introduced my older brothers to gaming, and was present at every moment in my little sister's life since her birth. Because of that, I expected the thought of now having to group him with an institution I had grown to distrust to leave me uneasy. Instead, I felt something I hadn't anticipated- - -hope. I had viewed the military as something that created distance rather than connection. But my stepdad wasn't choosing the service over us, he was entering the service for us. The Navy left me with a newfound sense of patriotism and pride, feelings I had long since buried. The shift led me to join my school's AJFROTC program and eventually a member oft the color guard drill team. Through countless hours of discipline and practice, I found purpose and a bright future ahead of me. At the time, I thought nothing could match the adrenaline before stepping onto the football field, all eyes on me as my team presented the colors and the roar of the crowd that followed. But unsurprisingly, my assumption was challenged. Now, as I stand at the docks, waiting for my dad to return from a seven-month-long deployment, the same energy surrounds me, but stronger. The cheers of the crowd aren't for a game, but for sailors who made sacrifices and served their country with pride. At that moment, I realize the difference between my biological father's service and my stepdad's. It wasn't a quick getaway; it was a duty, and now having a parent in the service represents a sense of pride and respect for their sacrifices. As I wait, my heart swells with admiration, knowing that this time, I am not just watching from the sidelines, I am part of it.
