The Bulloch County government's proposal to extend the paved S&S Greenway walking and cycling trail into Brooklet divides the opinions of neighbors, who disagreed in a passionate but neighborly way during a forum on the subject Thursday evening. Approx. 150 members of the public were present. Mayor Joe Grooms 1/Page Council members Greg Schlierf, Jim Stanoff, Bill Griffith, Nicky Gwinnett, and Brad Anderson City Clerk Lori Phillips Moderating: Judge Joey Cowart Also present: Bulloch County Manager Tom Couch & County Engineer Brad Deal A big decision for a small close-knit community - do they want a biking and hiking trail into their town. A packed room in Brooklet discussed the issue. The county had proposed extending a Greenway Trail from the edge of Statesboro into Brooklet. People spoke for and against the trail extending to the middle oft the town. Some objected to the route taking along the front yards ofs several houses and an elementary school. County leaders have offered to stop the trail at the city limits ift that's what people want. "It's always been my one thing that I've wanted was that people have the right to speak and to be heard," said Mayor Joe Grooms III. The mayor says they're gathering input from people before they reach a consensus and communicate with county leaders in the next few weeks. Construction on the trail extension would start roughly a year from now. Brooklet residents Roger Wentz, standing to speak, and wife Sheila Wentz, seated with sign at her feet, are definitely in the "no" camp on the current plan for the S&S Greenway Trail extension. But opponents and supporters were about évenly divided at the forum Thursday evening in Brooklet. 5. Conclusion: Mayor Joe Grooms A RNEEET Joe A. Grooms III, Mayor The foregoing minutes are true and correct and approved me on this of 15t by day ky 2021. Attest: - Lori Phillips, City Clerk RkiDlpo 2/Page
