CITIZEN REQUESTS AND COMMENTS - FOR ISSUES NOT ON AGENDA (PLEASE STATE NAME FOR THE RECORD - LIMIT COMMENTS TO 5 MINUTES) Katherine Weitz spoke of the Lion's Club donating $200.00 for the roof of the pavilion at the Sports Complex. She advised that they are also interested in doing more pancake breakfasts. fundraisers with the Mayor's Youth Council. Parks and Recreation Director Applebee spoke of the $1,500.00 raised from the Pancake Breakfasts fundraiser they already had. MEMBER RESPONSE: -None NEW BUSINESS 1. DISCUSS, CONSIDER AND ACT ON TUTORING AT THE DOUGLASS CENTER City Manager Marshall asked about when they would like to have the tutoring at the Douglass Community Center. Discussion on when the Youth Council has availability. MAYOR'S YOUTH COUNCIL FEBRUARY 10, 2025 PAGE 3 of 5 Parks and Recreation Director Applebee stated they will need to give time to advertise the services. Discussion on recruiting other students to assist with tutoring. Parks and Recreation Director Applebee gave some suggestions of what days and times would be beneficial and suggested maybe to start with once a month tutoring. Discussion on getting it up and running to see how the response is; this will get it up and going for the next school year. Mayor Grunder spoke of the career day at Santa Fe High School and having the Youth Council Members that attend Santa Fe High School come to recruit other students to help tutor at the career day. Discussion on social media blasts for advertising the tutoring. City Manager Marshall spoke about recruiting tutors. Discussion on different organizations at the school to speak to, to recruit tutors. Discussion on age group for tutoring services. Chair Weitz spoke of tutoring High School, first. Discussion on opening it up and see who participates. Chair Weitz suggested having a sign-in sheet sO they can know what age and what tutoring services were needed, this will help to see what areas were needed. Consensus to have it open to K-12 grades with open hours and start in April. Consensus that they will be recruiting other students to help tutor at the Career Day at Santa Fe High School and at Newberry High School they will talk to the National Honor Society. Consensus to have tutoring on April 7th to start from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Consensus to appoint Member Avila as the point of contact and to head up the tutoring. Mayor Grunder suggested they could talk to EDEP at High Springs Community School and see if they could offer services there. Mr. Avila spoke about the Statewide testing and maybe offer tutoring help in that area. He mentioned that on the website for Statewide testing there is help for tutors also, to give them an idea of what they could help tutor in. Consensus to have the second tutoring day as April 21, 2025. MAYOR'S YOUTH COUNCIL FEBRUARY 10, 2025 PAGE 4 of 5 2. DISCUSS POTENTIAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST FUNDRAISERS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARKS AND RECREATION AND THE LION'S CLUB. Discussion on what they would like to raise funds for. Mayor Grunder suggested raising money for the Pavilion roof for the repairs. City Manager Marshall suggested they could raise money for the Mayor's Youth Council. Chair Weitz asked if they could raise funds for a scholarship for college for High Springs Residents. City Manager Marshall stated he can double-check with our attorneys to make sure that would be okay. Parks and Recreation Director Applebee suggested fundraising for the tutoring, for snacks and such. Discussion on scholarship fund raising. Chair Weitz stated that they could do a need based and merit-based scholarship. City Manager Marshall stated that you could do one based on the mission statement also. Parks and Recreation Director Applebee stated that there are also sports sponsorships they could sponsor. Consensus that the Mayor's Youth Council would like to sponsor a team with our Parks and Recreation Department. Parks and Recreation Director Applebee gave dates of upcoming tournaments if they would like to fundraise at those with the Pancake Breakfast again. Motion Vice Chair Treese to sponsor a local volleyball team. Second Member Nichol. Motion carried 4-0. Consensus for potential Pancake Breakfast Dates of April 19th and May 3rd. Commissioner Weitz stated the Lion's Club wanted to have a fundraiser at their facility. City Manager Marshall stated that he will set up a meeting with the President of the Lions Club if one of the Mayor's Youth Council Members could join in on the meeting and we will discuss fundraising with them.
