Motion carried 11-0-3, with Committee Members Abrams, Baker and Smith being absent. DISCUSSION ITEMS 1. Reports from the 1st Battalion Regiment, USS Stockdale, and 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment Representatives Lieutenant Colonel Morrow stated the regiment is on their way to Darwin, Australia to support the Marine Rotational Force. The entire unit will deploy for 6- 7 months, throughout Southeast Asia and the Indo Pacific. This deployment has been going on since 2012. They now have an infantry battalion, a logistics battalion and an aviation squadron. There will be a number of exercises in the Philippines, in Australia and then neighboring countries. Each of those supported command elements, the infantry battalion, the logistics, and the squadron are going to be busy for 7 months because they are not just going to one location. They have about 20 different exercises, both bilateral, SO with one nation and multilateral with a bunch of them. The rotation, right now, is every other year, at which time the regiment will go on this deployment again. Sebrina King, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, stated she is currently with the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines and assisting with the Headquarters Company with the 1st Battalion. They just completed pre-deployment briefs and workshops to get the families ready. Marlene Lira, Ombudsman, USS Stockdale stated she was very proud of everyone on the USS Stockdale, and it was greet to meet SO many people that she only had contact with via email for the past seven months. Chair McGrath stated that City Council will have their meeting on March 4th. The Commanding Officer, Lauren Johnson, is going to receive city recognition for her service and then on March 7th is the change of command for the USS Stockdale. The USS Stockdale also received the Battle Effectiveness Award which was the only ship, in the entire squadron, to receive this award. It will be one of the most decorated ships in the Navy and has seen more combat than any naval ship since WWWII. All the sailors will also receive a Combat Award. Military Support Committee Minutes Page 2 of 5 February 24, 2025 Committee Member Bowman stated that Captain Blye let him know they are working on their aerial gunnery, both the study of it and their practice this year. They are also working on their group formation flying. The helicopters may go off individually and there are times when they are airlifting the entire infantry battalion SO they will be doing mass formation flying. Their annual training will be held this summer. 2. Discuss and Approve Sub-Committee Assignments A MOTION was made by Vice Chair Caldwell, seconded by Chair McGrath, to approve the sub-committee assignments. Motion carried 11-0-3, with Committee Members Abrams, Baker and Smith being absent. 3. Discuss, Vote and Approve Selecting the Topic for the 2025 Scholarship Committee Member Bowman stated that, in each unit, one senior will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship. It will be given based upon a written essay with a topic selected by the Military Support Committee. The scholarship can be used at a University, Community College or Trade School as long as it is used for education related reasons. Discuss and Approve a Check Request for the 1st Marine Regiment Easter Celebration - Food and Candy, Not to Exceed $500.00 A MOTION was made by Committee Member Ulrich, seconded by Committee Member Brown, to approve a check request for the 1st Marine Regiment Easter Celebration - food and candy, not to exceed $500.00.. Discuss and Approve a Check Request for Departure Days = Snacks, Not to Exceed $500.00 A MOTION was made by Committee Member Bowman, seconded by Committee Member Tuma, to approve a check request for departure days - snacks, not to exceed $500.00. Baby Care Packages - Vice Chair Caldwell will reach out to the sub-committee members and have a zoom meeting before the next meeting. She has ideas for possible sponsorships and corporations to help this year. Care Packages - Chair McGrath suggested possibly doing a mid-deployment care package. It would be possibly in May or June. Car Wash = Chair McGrath stated he will get two car washes scheduled. Holiday Parade - None Holiday Toy Drive - None Letter Writing - Committee Member Zueck stated that he met an art teacher, at a local school, and he was happy to propose a painting assignment for students to send out with care packages. Vice Chair Caldwell suggested having the paintings completed by the end of April in order to send them out with care packages. Major Fundraising = Chair McGrath suggested having sponsors for the two car washes in lieu of a major fundraiser this year. Vice Chair Caldwell stated that the Military Support Foundation will oversee corporate fundraising. Sea Country Festival = None. Scholarships = Discussed during item #3. Social Media - Committee Member Hoskins stated that she reached out to Randy on the Military Support Foundation to coordinate with him on items. Special Needs - Vice Chair Caldwell stated that she noticed single sailors on the USS Stockdale and would like to have something specific for them for future events. Veterans Day = None. 7. Chair Report Chair McGrath stated that he looks forward to a continued relationship with the First Marine Regiment. He also reminded committee members about the March 7th Council Meeting at which the Commanding Officer of the USS Stockdale, Lauren Johnson, will be recognized. He thanked the members for attending the Military Support Committee Meeting.
