The museum organization strives to promote Lamesa and Dawson County by working to preserve a treasured museum collection, as well as managing a large and finely appointed gathering venue. Social media and related registries detail themes featured in the permanent upstairs exhibits, occasionally bringing interested individuals and groups from near and far to visit the museum. Housed in an almost 100 year old historic hotel (which claimed fame as the nicest hotel between Dallas and El Paso-- -hence the name Dal Paso---in the hey day of train travel and freight delivery in this area), the building has appreciated now over 37 years of utilization for historical preservation, gatherings ofvarious types (such as informative programs, special exhibits, instructional classes of many kinds, weddings, showers, parties, charitable and community events, family and school reunions, various extended industry training sessions, job fairs, meetings and other bookings) which regularly result in overnight guests being housed in local lodging. Most seasons these events can easily add up to 300-500, or more, people in any given calendar year, helping to carry forth the tradition of "putting heads in beds", to benefit the Lamesa economy. The museum association remains solely responsible for the overhead costs ofi insurance, utilities, maintenance, cleaning and supplies, incurred by the organization annually. Recent years have seen astronomical increases in all facets, but especially concerning insurance coverage, which remains the main expenditure. The governing board of the association continues to ensure that the facility is readily available for tours and visits, upon request. Even though the last few years have seen a transition of fewer scheduled museum events, there has been a sharp increase in the number of facility rentals, and that is what now brings in the most "foot traffic", including a large number of out of town guests, many of whom spend a night or two in Lamesa. While the income generated from rental is mostly "a wash" due to expenses of cleaning, utilities and supplies, the increased rental usage incurs more wear and tear on the facility and very soon, there will be a need for some painting and repairs to be done. The museum board continues in its efforts to enhance and improve the actual upstairs museum, by way of several work days each year. The sheer nature of preserving a building this old (built in 1926), requires regular and frugal maintenance, as the board strives to practice stewardship with every museum dollar. The Lamesa Golden Tornado Jubilee is being staged in July of this year and the museum is always a favored attraction and gathering venue. Plans are being made to make the museum ready for that upcoming event. As a board, we continue to stand in grateful appreciation of the consideration of funds allocated to the museum by the Lamesa Hotel Motel Grant Committee each year. This helps greatly in the organization's efforts to keep the museum available for use by the community of Lamesa and Dawson County. On behalf of "The Old Dal Paso", we say "thank you."
