MINUTES CITY OF DENTON DENTON PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD South Branch Library = October 14, 2024 After determining that a quorum was present, the Denton Public Library Board convened on Monday, October 14, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was held at the South Branch Library at 3228 Teasley Lane, Denton, Texas. PRESENT: Eva Poole, Ling Jeng, Rebecca Fridley, Kerol Harrod ABSENT: Sandy Swan Also present are Jennifer Bekker and Marcella Lunn. 1. PRESENTATION FROM MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC Debi Scaggs presented. Donna Smith presented. 2. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION A. LB24-056 Consider approval ofthe minutes of August 12, 2024. The Board accepted and approved minutes of the August 12, 2024 meeting. Rebecca Fridley motioned, Kerol Harrod seconded, all in favor. B. LB24-059 The Board received an informational report regarding the Friends of the Denton Public Libraries. The Friends are celebrating National Friends ofLibraries Week, October 20-16, with a proclamation to be read at the October 15, 2024, City Council meeting as well as social media messaging to promote membership and engagement. C. LB24-058 The Board received an informational report regarding the Emily Fowler Library Foundation. There have been no changes since the last Library Board meeting. Library staff is coordinating with Foundation Trustees to schedule a Fall meeting. D. LB24-060 The Board received a report, held a discussion, and considered approval of the following Denton Public Library Policy update: Program Operating Policy - The Board accepted and approved the policy update with amendment to retain the statement that library 1 cards are not required to attend programs (page 4). LB24-057 The Board received an information report and held a discussion regarding: Library Facility Projects - North Branch facility projects are complete, with all exterior, roof, and trim work finished in September. Emily Fowler Central Library projects are mostly complete, with final interior and exterior paint touch ups and carpet punch list issues being addressed in October. Staff and Facilities department continue to work with carpet vendor to address issues with floor vents at Fowler. The Municipal Archive move project at Fowler is also happening in October and November. Most of the archival materials have moved upstairs into the old study rooms and staff workroom. Quotes for the removal ofthe old study room countertops and a large island workstation in the upstairs workroom are being requested. Additionally, a quote to remove cabinets in the downstairs work area has been requested to move the Outreach Librarian from North Branch to Emily Fowler Central Library. Furniture for the new Emily Fowler Central Library study rooms has been delayed due to vendor communication issues but is anticipated to arrive in December. Land. Acquisition - City Council approved the purchase of 14.434 acres of land located along Ryan Road for the future new South Branch Library. The contract is in place and Real Estate is finalizing the transaction. The land was purchased with Library and Parks bond funds as the library will be on approximately 5 acres ofland and the remainder will include green space, trails, and a possible co-located City facility after further analysis and public input. Denton Halloween - The City of Denton's month-long Halloween celebration kicked off on October 1. Events are planned daily throughout October. Most activities and decorations will be centered around the downtown square, with participation from various City, community, and local business entities. The library is hosting Halloween events at all its branches, offered a special limited-edition Denton Halloween library card, and features themed displays and photo opportunities at the branches. More details are available at www.dentonhalloween.com. 2024 Summer Reading Challenge - The 2024 Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) reports a total of2,073 people registered for SRC and 1,192 people, 57.5% of registrants, completed the program by reading at least 5 hours. Denton community members read 2.13 million minutes in June and July. FY. 24-25 Budget - The City's fiscal year is October 1-September 30. The library received an increase to offset the rising costs for public use databases and online learning resources as well as an increase in funding for hooplag digital services in FY24/25. 2 South Branch Library Youth Area - The children's play area in the South Branch Library will be adding an imaginative play kitchen, stand, or other play structure and expand the educational toys available for children. The library supports play as learning. Play helps children develop language, critical thinking, social, and executive function skills. E. LB24-061 Received an informational report and held a discussion regarding the Denton Public Library's digital collections: Denton Public Library offers digital collections from three different platforms. Digital collections include eBooks, digital audiobooks, downloadable music, and streaming TV and movies. Jennifer Bekker, Director ofLibraries provided a demonstration and overview of CloudLibrarym, ? hoopla@ digital services, and Lightbox8 Learning. The presentation contains FY23/24 library use summaries for CloudLibrarymm and hooplag. 3.
