POLICE THE VILLAGE, OF GAR HOUNT Sugar Mountain Police Department 251 Dick Trundy Lane Sugar Mountain, North Carolina 28604 (828)898-4349 cher@seesugar.com Chief Casey Turbyfill REPORT TO VILLAGE COUNCIL December 12, 2024 Police Department operations are running well. With our busy time approaching reserve officers have been added to the schedule, and officers will be working extra shifts. On 11/25 Officer Osborne resigned his position effective immediately. The Police Department job opening has been posted locally and on the North Carolina League of Municipalities website, as of my report no applications have been received. IV will be covering the day shift in December. Officer Brown will continue to work a split shift assisting both the day and night shift, and working most weekends. The January schedule will be evaluated and changes made if needed. Officers have been busy patrolling the Village Streets and answering calls for service. Our call volume will continue to rise in the coming months. Officer Hicks will be assisting local area law enforcement agencies in the shop with a cop on 12/16. This is a great community policing opportunity for the Sugar Mountain Police Department. Children in need are identified through community outreach. Twenty-nine (29) children will be taken to dinner, then to Wal-Mart to purchase Christmas gifts and needed items. Iwant to thank Sheriff Mike Henley and everyone that makes this event happen every year. This will be the second year Officer Hicks has helped with the event. On 11/21 Officer Hick responded to the NC184 Food Lion area. Officer Hicks was assisted by the NC Highway Patrol in working multiple vehicle accidents due to road conditions. The roadway was impassable until vehicles could be cleared and NC DOT could improve the roadway conditions. On11/23, Officer Brown conducted a vehicle stop on Cross Park Drive. The vehicle's registration plate had expired in May. Officer Brown found the driver of the vehicle to have an active warrant for failing to appear in court. The driver was arrested on the warrant and transported to the Avery County Magistrates Office. On 12/3 ChiefTurbyfill responded to a residence on Shelter Rock Circle to investigate the report of a suspicious person seen on the residence security cameras the prior night. ChiefTurbyfill found that the rear. sliding glass door had been damaged and that a male subject had attempted to break into the residence. During the investigation, a suspect was identified. Chief Turbyfill is in the process of seeking criminal charges for three (3) counts oft first-degree trespass, one (1) count of property damage, and one (1) count of attempted breaking and entering. These investigations depended highly on the use of the security footage and the cooperation of nearby residents. The FLOCK camera system proved to be a valuable asset in this investigation, confirming a suspect vehicle, and providing a timeline of the movements of the vehicle.
