The reason for this letter of support is to provide the Historic Commission with some background information on the decision for the resident at 106 Choptank avenue to pursue Currently, there are two failing concrete strips with a grass strip up the center. The landowner and Unity wish to replace these 2 failing concrete strips with one, continuous permeable driveway, constructed out of permeable conçrete pavers. The reasoning for this is mainly 1) The structural integrity. The 2 drive strips are more likely to settle, and shift due to the weight and motion of vehicular traffic. Two strips are: not as stable or sturdy as one continuous drive, as the whole base can be constructed and compacted uniformly, allowing the weight oft the vehicles to bes supported more consistently. Likewise, modern vehicles are much larger now, and having 2 strips to keep the tires on is significantly more difficult with these wider vehicle footprints. Due to the nature of permeable construction, the larger base here is particularly important to the success of any permeable driveway so that it can perform the function ofs stormwater infiltration while also supporting the 2) The Grass Strip in the middle is difficult to maintain and stabilize. The residents of106 Choptank have several vehicles that are constantly parked in the driveway spaçes. Turfis greatly reliant on sunlight and water to be green and successful, neither of which are available when vehicles remain parked on top said grass stripping. This causes the grass to die, creating brown spots which lead to sediment runoff, andi itis certainly not: an appealing aesthetic. The continuous hardscape driveway approach will require much less maintenance, than one with a central turf strip. We would be open to designs which mimic or imitate the look ofs strips, perhaps a different color paver in the center, however the overall goal is to have alll hardscape beneath the vehiçles to bel low maintenance and Iwould bel happy to discuss this matter in further detail with anyone who wishes to do sO.
