Member Valverde reported that September 17, was National Voter Registration Day and he reminded everyone to check their status to make sure that everything was correct. Member Rona discussed Indigenous Peoples' Day and shared her thoughts on our role as stewards of the land. Committee Members and staff made announcements and provided updates on events and meetings they attended. The following members of the public addressed the Committee: Polly Stenberg expressed support for a ceasefire; discussed being unable to get an item on an agenda; the need to have a conversation; discomfort with standing by; wanting to create a safe space for people to express thoughts and concerns; coming together to be one community; the speed with which a resolution was passed in October 2023 and pride expressed at taking a strong stance; and allowing the community to come Jared Bailey discussed talking points; expressed disagreement with the idea that a ceasefire is divisive noting that had not been proven; noted that Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. were labeled as divisive figures; asserted that there was nothing divisive about peace; discussed bombing in Gaza; together to grieve and mourn. 2 Equity and] Human Relations Advisory Committee September r17,2024 people who are not being bombed so they don't care; suffering; and he noted that there was nothing divisive about peace, everyone wanted peace, shelter and food, and a ceasefire was Estee Chandler provided background on herself; discussed the failure of the October 2023 resolution to recognize the diverse and popular desire for a ceasefire; growing fear and desperation in the community from watching the suffering of friends and family be ignored; support for a ceasefire from the Jewish community; she asked the Committee to urge the City Council to take immediate action to place a resolution supporting an immediate mutual ceasefire on an agenda for the good of the community and to save every life possible; discussed other cities in Los Angeles county that have passed such resolutions resulting in healing and unity; building a Culver City where everyone feels they belong; symbolic actions; the population of Gaza that is being starved to death; watching a genocide; she asked Culver City to join a nationwide effort to stop it; and she indicated that history the fastest way to achieve that. was watching. Member Nweke joined the meeting. Sara Blough provided background on herself; asked the City Council to agendize a mutual, permanent, and immediate ceasefire resolution; discussed responsibility for the welfare of society at large; affirming support for Palestinian neighbors; loss of family; social consequences for asking to acknowledge a year of devastation; she did not share concerns that the resolution would divide the community, but rather felt that it would be unifying; indicated feeling pride in the multi-faith coalition of humanitarians echoing the call; and she noted that change Daniel Nickfardjam was called to speak but could not be heard. Hala Kahn expressed appreciation for the chance to be heard; discussed sharing concerns and thoughts on the situation in Palestine and the region; heartbreak with being silenced; difficulty exercising their civil right to voice dissent; concern with creating an echo chamber in which some voices are heard more powerfully than others; denying and silencing people who are raising their voices about an unnecessary amount of killing; continued support with arms and funds that starts at the local level. 3 Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee September 17, 2024 are increasing the war effort in the region; no answers for innocent lives being lost and war crimes being committed; actions taken under the guise of self protection; she felt that Jews should not be afraid to voice opposition; discussed accusations and labels; elevating some voices over others; not calling for a unified voice for peace and ending the killing of children and innocent lives around the world; she asked that the City Council agendize a ceasefire resolution; and asserted that all voices matter, not just those with Mariah Fontijn provided background on herself; spoke in support of an immediate permanent mutual ceasefire resolution; discussed fear in Islamic students or those of Palestinian descent; not feeling safe or heard; efforts of schools to help the students feel heard; concern with choosing sides or coming off as antisemitic; the request to the City Council for a ceasefire resolution; social media; gruesome pictures; the UCLA encampments; and she wanted to see the Nicholas Conner, Jackson Market, provided background on himself; expressed support for a permanent, mutual ceasefire; discussed friendships with people of all cultures for many years; accusations and negative response since they felt the need to speak up for the Palestinian people; Jewish people who have vocalized solidarity with the call for the ceasefire; people who want to protest more that do not want to see the end of Israel or to hurt their neighbors; extreme voices; difficulty of talking about the issue; the desire to provide a safe space to talk about issues; inability to get the City Council to agendize a discussion; concern with wasting time; and he asked the EHRAC to help them send the resolution to Ayman Mahfouz provided background on himself and asked that access to the City Council. ceasefire resolution passed. the City for consideration. the EHRAC agendize a discussion of a ceasefire. Daniel Nicktardjam provided background on himself; discussed his previous comments to the City Council; individual responsibility to make the world a better place; concern with not being heard; detrimental impacts to his mental health and wellbeing, and that of his friends; concern with denial of repeated requests to agendize a discussion about what is going 4 Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee September1 17,2024 on; the feeling that some Jewish voices are taking precedent over others; Culver City as a place where every single voice has to be heard; the need to work together to make the world a better place; the bare minimum of having an open discussion; he invited people to talk with him; he asked for a discussion of an immediate, mutual, and permanent ceasefire; and he Emily Dibiny discussed being met with hate in Culver City for being a Palestinian American; bombing in Gaza; relatives in danger; being unable to grieve; racism; bullying of her son in school; she noted that EHRAC Members were volunteers noting that she has volunteered for years and serves on the Advisory Committee on Housing and Homelessness; discussed having her comments in support of the Jackson Market taken down; the need to educate people as part of Anti-Hate Week about Arabs, Muslims and her Jewish friends who are anti-Zionist; stated that being labeled a terrorist was dehumanizing; discussed a free educational documentary; people's homes that are being stolen; and people who worked 20 years to get their homes, Ryda Hamida provided background on herself; thanked Chair Bano and Member Moammar for their efforts; discussed feeling unheard and unseen; being de-humanized; the work of the EHRAC to humanize communities; she noted that Council Member Puza heard them but did not validate them; discussed ensuring that human rights are respected in Culver City; the responsibility to hold space for all residents that are feeling pain and suffering during this time; the need to moderate a discussion to create a greater sense of belonging in Culver Cityi she indicated that they were asking for a meeting per the request by Council Member Vera; discussed holding the EHRAC accountable for ensuring that everyone is heard; comments from Vice Mayor O'Brien and Council Member Eriksson indicating that the EHRAC should consider the item and ensure some kind of resolution; the need to create a discussion to provide an outcome and provide resolution; addressing anti- Arab, anti-Muslim, and anti-Palestinian hate; the process; Huong Nghiem-Eilbeck was called to speak but could not be wanted to see unity rather than division. have lost them, and barely escaped. and her hope for a simple resolution. heard. Additional discussion ensued between staff and Committee Members regarding clarification that whatever is agendized for the next meeting would not result in a recommendation to the City Council; recognition that a ceasefire or Council resolution would not be the main focus; community comment; Committee agreement to agendize a discussion of an Action Item that would include a discussion within EHRAC about addressing the current situation in Culver City with regard the experiences of community members; the potential for creation of an ad hoc subcommittee responsible for creation of a Community Conversation; the ability to plan a program without an ad hoc subcommittee; discussion of the nature of a possible Community Conversation; clarification that a motion is not required to agendize an item that has Committee consensusi the meeting planned for the Veterans Building Rotunda Room at 6:00 P.M. on October 22, 2024; event setup; the planned meeting for November 19 for the Transgender Day of Remembrance activity; the feeling that the November 19 date should be held; the need to work with staff to hold a special meeting; determination of the action items for a November meeting; the need to agendize a report from the awards subcommittee at the November meeting; staff agreement to research and return with information about whether a 15 Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee September 17,2024 November 19 meeting is feasible; and the need for an update from the promotional materials ad hoc subcommittee.
