The bridge has been closed to vehicle traffic for about nine years. Some council members and citizens may recall the extensive community interest in this bridge between 2015 and 2019, when it was decided that the city and/or county would not pursue an alternate and costly means of developing a new river crossing, and would not abandon the 1904 Bridge. Since its partial restoration and rededication in 1994, it has been in a state of declining repair, with no record of maintenance done ini these past 30 years. While the bridge remains open to pedestrian traffic today, there is an increasing concern that it may fail catastrophically under even these reduced loads. During eclipse planning in March 2024, TXDOT provided the City with a 2019 bridge inspection report and stated plainly, in writing, that they would not To better understand the current common uses of the bridge, City Manager Hunt directed staff toi install game cameras on1 the bridge for four weeks between September and October. In that time, the cameras documented well over 200 crossings by walkers, bicyclists, and even motorcyclists.
