ITEMS OF INTEREST: As Council will note, it is a very light agenda which is not unusual for January 1. As noted in media reports, the Diggs Tract has officially opened and been dedicated for public use. This property will provide enjoyable and unique outdoor recreation opportunities for decades to come and its free access and open for public use by all. City staff will be working over the next few coming months to finalize plans to submit to NCWRC for approval to proceed with installation of campground on the Diggs Tract. The site has been selected and will be located within walking distance of the boat landing on a beautiful bluff just above the boat landing and easy access from road and parking area. Hitchcock Creek Greenway and Blue Trail access at Steele Street still continues to get strong use even during winter months. Staff is proceeding with plans to construct restroom facilities at that location with that task hopefully being Bid opening on the old Steele Building demo and conarnucton/elevecpmert project is scheduled for January 23, 2014. A pre-construction conference with all bidders will be held on January 9, 2014. A public announcement of this project Work on the Tourism Development Study will resume in earnest in late January, 2014. Target date for recommendations is still anticipated for late Spring, 2014. City staff is currently working on updating the annual Capital Improvement Plan in anticipation of beginning work on the upcoming new budget. The CIP continues to be a great tool to plan for the orderly replacement of capital equipment and is a valuable tool in budget planning. 6. Ihave reviewed mid year budget status as we completed half of our budget year on December 31, 2013. All city expenditures and budget projections are running as expected thru December 31, 2013 and certainly, we hope it stays that way as we have not had any major unexpected expenditures as we did last year.
