The following members were also present: Councilman Adrian G. Simmons, Rev. Allen R. Grimes, Ayele H. Negussie, Sabrina Jones, and Carolyn Edwards, Administrative Assistant II. There were one (1) member of the public present. Vice Chair Rian Reed called the meeting to order, and Carolyn Edwards completed The Meeting Minutes for July 24, 2024, were introduced to the committee for approval. Rev. Allen R. Grimes motioned to approve the minutes and Ayele Negussie seconded the motion. All present approved the minutes. Vice Chair Rian Reed adjusted the agenda and introduced Councilman Adrian G Simmons to the committee. the role call. Councilman Adrian G. Simmons introduced himself to the committee and offered his services. He thanked the committee for their work thus far and looks forward to working with them all and providing as much resources as he possibly can. He encouraged Carolyn Edwards to share is contact information with the members and invited them to reach out to him a as needed. Councilman Simmons recognized that the committee has been charged with a big mission in accordance with the Resolution 5-18. Survey to School Counselors: Vice Chair Rian Reed states that none of the surveys distributed to the principalslvice principals and parent liaisons have been returned, therefore it is necessary that the team circles back to ensure the send them in and also find out when the mayor will be meeting with the principals sO that they can attend. Grant Fundingtraining idea: Vice Chair Rian Reed would like for Councilman Simmons to introduce the idea the committee has to the counciimembers. She states that yes, the schools receive money from the City, however there are lots of grants out there that they can possibly qualify for and the committee and assist by teaching them how to search and apply for the grants that are available. The team discussed what the overall plan would look like. Potentially creating a subcommittee that can work on this project. Vice Chair Reed forwarded Councilman Simmons access to the folder so that he could further explore things that have already been created. 1 Partnerships with organizations within the City: Vice Chair Reed open the floor for anyone who may have ideas regarding other organizations that the committee can team up with to expand its reach. Previously the focus has been on the principals and the schools, but creating a larger format where all schools, notj just those in Laurel, can come together and share resources. They discussed potentially creating a subcommittee that can work on this project. A good topic to start off with would be that the Prince George's County School Board doesn't presently have a representative for the City of Laurel due to the resignation of the previous board member. Further discussion regarding the potential creation of a subcommittee took place and input from the member of the community present was received. Getting a voice within the community. Councilman Simmons reminded the committee that perhaps a member of the committee could attend the Prince George's County Board meetings in the meantime. Next Steps: Vice Chair Reed will send out a pole to see the availability of members who are willing to join and work on the subcommittee and talk about what the Re-Create the calendar that reflects the Prince George's County Board of Education meeting schedule so that members can attend. Especially since "Eco system" would look like. there isn'ta current representative for the City of Laurel. There being no further business to come before the Committee, the meeting was adjourned at 6:33pm.
