TOW OF VANCEBORO BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING Held their regular monthly meeting on August 5, 2024 at 7:00PM in the. Jimmie L. Morris Boardroom Call to order by Mayor Chad Braxton. II. Roll call Those Present: Mayor Chad Braxton, Alderman Steve Belrose, Alderman Keith Cannon, Alderman Thad Jones, Alderman Russell Ipock and Alderman Todd McMillen. III. Invocation by Alderman Belrose. IV. Pledge of Allegiance. V. Approval of minutes from last meeting. Alderman Ipock made a motion to approve minutes. Motion was seconded by Alderman Belrose and carried. Vote 5-0. VI. Approval of Cash Receipts and Disbursements. Alderman Jones made a motion to pay bills. Motion was seconded by Alderman Belrose and carried. Vote 5-0. VII. Public Comment. No Public Comments. VIII. Fortiline. Mr. Dayton Rugg and Mr. Mike Gartsu presented a new quote to the Town for water meters and did a presentation. Mr. Brown, Town Manager of Maysville attended the meeting to answer any questions regarding the Kamstrup IX. Police Report was presented by Chief Keys. The new patrol car came in and Officer Johnson is driving it. The department participated in two different checkpoints this month within the county. I'd like to congratulate Lt. Moses-Winnings of the Craven County Sheriff's Department for winning the NC Medal of Valor for her heroic actions that saved another deputy's life back in 2021. Officer. Johnson has attended multiple officer survival training courses. He has continued to be a better officer and has proven to be a valuable asset to our town. Wea are still looking for more meters. They have been al Kamstrup customer for fiveyears. volunteers to help with Vanceboro Night Out on September 7th. School starts back on August 26th, we will be prepared for an increase: in traffic during the morning X. Mayor's Reports. I'd like to commend Chief Keys; I received a phone call from Kathleen stating that Chief Keys helped her with a situation and went above and beyond to make sure she received great customer service. The tree has been cut down from College Street. Hope everyone had a great and safe 4th ofJuly. Public Works employee Chris Edwards returned to work last week after his accident back in) November of2023. We are glad to have him back. Birthdays this month include Chris Edwards and Alderman Keith Cannon. Town Hall will be closed September 2nd in observance ofLabor Day. Next Board of Alderman meeting is scheduled September gth. Next recycling date is August 15th. Barnhill Construction has paved the eight spots throughout town which include work at: Fowle, Mill, College, Farm Life Avenue and Buck Lane. We have received the new police car; we will be selling the old Crown Victoria soon. Thank you to all that helped with the mulch at the playground, it looks great. Craven County is giving the Town $5,000 this fiscal year to go towards the playground. Water meter surveys have been completed throughout town which also complies with thel Lead and Copper requirements that are due in October. We will meet with Utility Services tomorrow and will see the results of the water meter survey. Ditch work and edging throughout Town will be done in the Fall. Limbs at the Wastewater Treatment Plant will also be removed in the Fall. September 7th will be Vanceboro Night Out. The tree trimming throughout Town will be completed again by Duke Progress Energy in 2025. Harvest Beam has sent out a survey to our residents, please fill these out and return it to the Town Hall. This survey will help know what areas of town need better internet access. This information will also help them with the Federal funding they are: seeking. We have asked the State to repair the road at 8105 Main Street. Tropical Storm Debby is going to be affecting our area, please make preparations ahead of the storm. Our Public Works department is filling the tanks and getting generators in place in case there is a power outage. Do not travel through streets that are flooded or close to downed power lines. Weyerhauser sawmill has closed, there are 73 employees that are affected. State Senator Jim Perry has resigned his position, Mr. Bob Brinson will fill his seat until November and will be running in the election. He will be swore in at the Court House on Friday at 3:30 p.m., I plan to attend his swearing in ceremony. Imet with Representative Steve Tyson this past week. Ireminded him of the needs of our water and wastewater plants. Three of the seventeen houses will start being built on Buck Lane soon. The home on Main Street beside the bank is in the process of being built. Iam glad to see new families coming to our town. Our audit preparations are: finally proceeding for the 2023 and 2024 fiscal years. Iattended the CRC Meeting stated that they are in need of correction officers. They are offering sign-on bonuses and now 18-year-olds can apply for this position. They have completed some painting and paved the parking lot at the facility. They currently have 315 employees and 35 vacancies in and afternoon times. Vanceboro. XI. Alderman Reports. Meeting Minutes August 5, 2024 Alderman McMillen inquired on thej parking lot being remarked. Mayor Braxton stated that Chris Walls will be doing this project when it cools off. Thank you to Alderman Belrose for his help with the mulch and getting us a reduced price for the playground. Iwould love to see more attention placed on the upkeep of the park. Have we heard anything from Dollar General and when they plan to reopen? Alderman Jones had no comment. Alderman Ipock stated he was glad that Chris Edwards is back. Thanked Vernon Edwards for holding everything together while he was out. Ihave spoke with several towns and Kamstrup meters is the way to go. It was great to have the Maysville Town Manager here to share about the meters and how they are working in their town. In conversations with other towns, Ihave been told not to use cellular. I'm glad to see the town being proactive regarding the pending storm coming in. The Rotary Club has a new president, Hudson Jordan. The group is looking for some community projects to help beautify the town. Alderman Belrose is glad to see Chris Edwards back at work, especially since mowing season is in full force. Itwas a hot day on Wednesday, spreading the mulch at the playground. I'd like to thank all that came out and helped with this project. Iprovided them with donuts and soda while we were working. We used 85% ofthe mulch that we purchased. There is a tree at the old park that needs to be removed. Alderman Cannon thanked Keith Morris for his help with the CPR training provided to the Police Department. The Rescue Squad paid for the officers to take this training. XII.
