Sugar Mountain Police Department POLICE THE VILLAGE OF MOURTI 251 Dick Trundy Lane Sugar Mountain, North Carolina 28604 (828)898-4349 chief@seesugar.com Chief Casey Turbyfill REPORT TO VILLAGE COUNCIL October 9th, 2024 The police department is operating well, no disruption in our services to report. It has been a long couple weeks with the devastation brought to our community from hurricane Helene. All Village of Sugar Mountain employees assist our residence, visitors and guest before, during, and after the storm. Sugar Mountain Police Department assisted in clearing roads, providing traffic control, assisting fire and rescue, and delivering essential goods to residences. Sugar Mountain Police Officers have conducted many welfare checks, and residence checks. Iwant to thank every one of our police officers for being here during this event. Ihave the pleasure of working with a great team, and could not do this job without them. From period 09/25 through 10/8 Sugar Mountain Police Department a total of 609.75 hours worked, and 2,710 patrol miles. This was an event like we have never seen before. Our toughest obstacle was losing all communications, not only with Avery Communications, but also with each other. Avery County Sheriff Mike Henley acquired Sugar Mountain Police Department a Starlink unit. This will be operational soon, and will be in place if we have a loss of internet again. This is a great asset, for means of communications with others in a situation like we had. So many in the community have, and continue to step up and help anyway possible. Iwould like to thank everyone who checked on their neighbor's, during this time. Iwant to thank everyone for helping during the cleanup phase of the storm. Sugar Mountain Resort assisted in road clearance immediately, offering man power and equipment, this was a valuable asset to the Village. Many citizens worked to cut trees from roadways. In a time of SO much destruction, Sugar Mountain united to as a community to help one another, and once again a reminder of what a great community we have here at Sugar Mountain. Ihave a few points to mention for the upcoming days. Please call us if you see suspicious activity. The police department number is (828)898-4349; you will be transferred to Avery Communications if no one is in the office. Call 911if emergency. We want to check up on any activity that you would think is unusual for our area. Calling the next day is like not calling at all, when it comes to the investigation stage of checking on this type activity. If possible take a photo of the vehicle, or get the license plate number. This is a prime time for scams; do not give anyone your personal information especially over the phone, or internet. Do not let anyone do work for you without an agreement in place. Do not pay for work that has not been preformed. Official representatives of any agency will have identification, if someone refuses to show you identification they most likely are not who they say they are. Just taking their word for who they are isn't enough. The Police Department is working normal schedule, and we are available 24/7.Alsolwould ask everyone to follow the Sugar Mountain Police Department Facebook page; this was a vital tool during the storm to get out information to the community and their families.
