Madison County Board of Elections Meeting Minutes Regular/Special Session - August 22, 2017 Thel Madison County Board of Elections met on' Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at noon in the Board ofElections Conference Room. In attendance: Jerry Wallin, Board Chairman; Ray Lewis, Board Secretary; Dyatt Smathers, Board Member; Kathy Ray, Director; and three (3) members oft the public. Call to Order: Chairman Wallin called the meeting to order at 12:00: noon. Agenda: Member Smathers requested a discussion ofs student election assistants under "Other Matters". Secretary Lewis made a motion: To set the agenda. Member Smathers seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously. Approval of Minutes: Member Smathers made a motion: To approve the minutes from the. July 18, 2017meeting. Secretary Lewis seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. Chairman and Members' Reports: The Chairman and Secretary Lewis commented on Session Law 2017-6 and pending court rulings. Arguments are scheduled for August 28"h. Board Member Smathers commented about the success oft the. August SBOEE conference and provided information regarding the certified election official assessment. He added that Executive Director Kim Strach notified him that he successfully completed the exam. Director's Report: The Director presented the July 31,2017 budget report. Other Matters: Member Smathers cited General Statute 163.42.1 that allows the appointment of student election assistants who will be 17 years ofage at the time of any election or primary in which the student works. The Board requested the Director collaborate with the high schools' civic departments to recruit student assistants.
