We have some incidents of interest tor report. Our officers have been working to slow our traffic down, in problem areas. Several speeding violations have been addressed with warnings and citations. SMPD staff is always out doing a great job. We have a great group of officers who are dedicated to the public. safety of the Village. After completing firearms training this week, the department has completed the 2024 mandatory in-service. In the coming months, I will complete our in agency training audit, and submit the compliance report to North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards. Officer Linkous is doing well upon completion of field training. Officer Brown and Officer Hicks have been influential in our community policing efforts. Getting out and speaking with citizens is one of our top priorities. Officer Buchanan and Officer Osborne are always out patrolling, and willing to assist the public. I cannot thank our Officers enough for the great job they do for the Village. On 8/30/2024 Officer Osborne and Officer Buchanan responded to a shoplifting incident at Lowes Foods, A male suspect was located, and found to be a fugitive from Carter County Tennessee, wanted for felony theft. The suspect was arrested and taken to the Avery County Jail. The suspect has been extradited to Tennessee. On 9/4/2024 a combined effort with the Avery County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Delray Beach Police (FL) Department resulted in the arrest of Maxcim Kori a fugitive from Delray Beach Florida. All three mentioned agencies are members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. It was found that Maxcim Kori had moved to Sugar Mountain, and was wanted for internet crimes against children. A fugitive from justice arrest warrant was served on Maxcim Kori. Maxcim Kori was transported to the Avery County Jail and given a $500,000 bond by the Avery County Magistrate. Maxcim Kori is awaiting extradition back to Florida. Iwant to thank the Avery County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations for their invaluable assistance in this case. Avery County Sheriff Mike Henley and his staff have always been willing to assist the Sugar Mountain Police Department when needed. Officer Osborne was a valuable asset in the warrant service in this case. Ihave attached the Avery County Sheriff's Office press release in this case. On 9/7/2024 Officer Brown and Officer Hicks were made aware of a shoplifting incident at Lowes Foods. Several hundred dollars of merchandise was stolen by a female subject. The subject has been identified and Officer Hicks will be seeking an arrest warrant in the next few days. My family is adjusting to the new addition well. Ia am thankful for everyone who congratulated us and checked in with us. My wife and the baby are healthy, and doing great. lam blessed to work in such a great community.
