MINUTES OF THE SHADE TREE COMMISSION OF THE BOROUGH OF SEWICKLEY April2 2, 2024 The Shade Tree Commission (STC) convened on April 2, 2024, in Council Chambers. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Kathy Brandt at7 7:00 p.m. Ina attendance were: Members Kathy Brandt, Chairperson Andrew Frishkorn, Vice Chairperson Danielle Shinsky Chris Crayton, Secretary (Absent) Mary. APPROVAL OFI MINUTES Minutes from March meeting unanimousyapproved. Il. STAFFING UPDATES None IlI. OLD BUSINESS None IV. NEW BUSINESS - ARBORISTI REPORT & APPLICATIONS Spring Tree Removal Program: The bid package has not been sent out yet. It willi include five Tree Maintenance Program: The pruning of Oaks and Elms was completed in March. Ab bid fort treatment of ash trees for emerald ash bore was received from the Davey Tree service. A bid was also requested from another tree service, with no response to date. Tree Planting Program: Tyler worked with Donna and Brian and has received a commitment from Public Works to assist in the planting of 20 trees. Tyler provided an updated list of18 recommended planting sites (attached) and several additional optional locations. Tylerwas requested to pick from the optional list for the remaining two locations, as the STC did not high priority trees. have a preference. Removal/Pruning Applications: pruning/removal of dead branches. after the tree enters dormancy. 607 Nevin Avenue - Removal requested and denied. However, tree approved for 713/715 Orchard Terrace - private tree removal requests approved 604 Pine Road - borough tree pruning request - approved, but delayed until thet fall 909 Centennial Ave = Removal of dead tree #576 approved. Pruning of oak #1289 approved but delayed until the fall afteri the tree enters dormancy. 319 McCrady' Way- - No objections to planting oft two trees on private property. 171 Beaver St. - resident concerned about leaning tree. Tree was inspected by the arborist and will continue to be monitored. Removal is not required at this time. Motion to approve Arborist Report was unanimously approved. See Attachment A. Authorization from STC not required. V. CORRESPONDENCE Correspondence was shared about illegal removal of two mature cherry trees at 306 Grant Street (ID# 1205 and 1206). Borough issued al bill for $3,7001 to resident fort the illegal act. Resident responded that the cost for 2" trees are between $1,260 to $1,500. The Borough Arborist indicated that value oft tree needs to include consideration of larger size and maturity of trees that were removed. VI. BUDGET None VII. ADMINISTRATIVE Ity was discussed that we should forego the May meeting since we will be participating in tree planting and May Mart volunteering activities. VIII. ACTION ITEMS OLD NEW STCist to look into adding recommended tree species for planting on the website. April 27th Tree Planting (Earth Day) planned - about 201 trees. May Mart - Booth needed. Request table and canopy from Borough. Tyler to look into handouts and possible tree forr raffle. IX. ADIOURNMENT: There being no other business before the STC, on motion from Chris Crayton, and unanimously approved, Vice Chairperson.
