Chairman Steve DeBerry shared thoughts from "The Spirit of Christmas Recaptured".I He began with Deuteronomy 32:7. Ask thy father and he will show thee, thy elders and they will tell thee. By rewinding the past we can gain momentum for the future. As this occurs at Christmas time, we find ourselves joyously rejuvenated. Chairman DeBerry led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag ofthe United States of Chairman DeBerry called upon Clerk of Superior Court. John Deaton. Mr. Deaton led the swearing in of re-elected board members Tommy Blake, Anne Evans and Bryan Dozier. Angela Smith, filling the vacant seat of. Jesse Hill, was sworn in as a new board member. Following the installation ofr members, the board voted unanimously for Steve DeBerry to retain his position of America. Chairman and Tommy Blake to retain his position as Vice-Chair. They ended their season with a 16-1 record and they also made it to the second round oft the state playoffs. Congratulations! motion, with Lynn Epps seconding. The board approved unanimously. Chairman DeBerry requested to approve the consent agenda. Bryan Dozier made the Chairman DeBerry called upon Jon LaChance, principal for Page Street Elementary. Mr. LaChance presented the Care Closet. This was started last year as the Clothing Closet but with only about 61 items. It was re-introduced this year but under the name Care Closet. Ms. Dawkins applied for and received a $3000 grant from the Montgomery County Fund to help supply the Care Closet with clothing, shoes, and personal care items. This isa along with renewing donations we: receive each year and we: are still continuing to look for more donations. The goal for Page Street ist to provide a family environment where a child can feel safe and comfortable. We feel that while in school every child should feel safe, important and comfortable sO that they can focus on learning and not be stressed about having the appropriate clothing, shoes or personal care. The Care Closet provides, for both boys and girls, new assorted clothing, undergarments, shoes, personal care items as well as an area for them to brush their teeth or clean up ifunable to do this at home. Currently the closet is providing items for approximately 5 to 10: students per day. The school would also like to expand the Care Closet to include food and winter coats sO, they are looking at the possibility of doing a coat and/or a food drive to fill this student need. Chairman DeBerry called upon Dr. Tracy Grit for policies for first read. Dr. Grit stated that most oft the updates regard children of military families. Anne Evans also noted the requested changes to the teacher licensure and ifapproved she would like to see that shared with retired teachers. These policies will be brought back to the board in January for approval. Chairman DeBerry called upon Dr. Dale Ellis for the Superintendent's' Comments. You might have noticed during the Page Street Elementary School presentation that about 79% ofour students receive free or reduced lunches. Basically this tells you that 4 out of5 students in Montgomery County qualify for free or reduced lunch. This is a definite sign oft the poverty in our county and is definitely an ongoing concern for the board members, school administrators and everyone. It is the holiday season and it is the Tree of Hope season. I want to thank our staff that have worked SO diligently on that process. I encourage anyone that is able to please give to that cause SO that we can make sure that our students have a good Christmas. It is just like Mr. LaChance was speaking about earlier ofh how excited the children get when they get aj pair of new shoes. This is the same way we want them to feel on December 25th because every child deserves to have a good Christmas. We only have sO many school days but the need is great particularly as the time gets colder and the temperatures drop. Our kids are going to needj jackets and clothing. We appreciate our community and they have always risen up and done a great job of making sure our kids have more than enough. We want to thank them for that and encourage everybody to give to the Tree of Hope program. Chairman DeBerry then asked for a motion to go into closed session to discuss personnel and consult the board attorney. Bryan Dozier made the motion, with Lynn Epps seconding. The board approved entering into closed session unanimously.
