Cliff Aldridge, 1043 N Main Street (city resident): He spoke concerning the speeding issue on North Main Street from Grace Moravian Church to Lebanon Street. He indicated that they have had several wrecks coming through their front yard. It is getting to the point that he will not let his grandchildren play in the front yard. He went to the police department and requested records to show the wrecks in this area: 2019-6 accidents, 2020-two accidents, 2021-11 accidents, 2022-12 accidents, and 202-14 accidents. He would like the Board to Seeing no other speakers, Mayor Pro Tempore Hutchens deelared the Public Forum closed. figure out what to do about this issue. NEW BUSINESS: a) Project Updates: Darren Lewis updated the Board on the current projects for the City of Mount Airy. Currently, the city has 18 different grants totaling $28,295,700. 1 AARP Livable Community Grant: In the amount of $16,200 to make enhancements along Market Street with benches, bike racks, permanent tables, and recycling containers. T-Mobile Grant: In the amount of $50,000 for wayfinding signage in the downtown area. Youth Mentorship Grant: In the amount of $70,000-a multiple year grant project to help the underserved in the community and working with the local high school. Advancing Workforce Development Career Readiness Grant: In the amount of $150,000- an multiple year grant project to help the underserved community and working with the Surry Arts Council: Received a state allocation of $625,000 for expanding the lobby at the Andy Griffith Playhouse along with ADA accessible parking and restroom Infrastructure Grants: Public Works is working on multiple grants for the city's water and sewer infrastructure. The water asset inventory grant is in the amount of $100,000, the sewer asset inventory grant is in the amount of $100,000, and the water treatment plant grant is in the amount of $200,000. These projects should be closed out by early Mount Airy Public Library: The City of Mount Airy received $1.5 million for interior Greenway/River Restoration Project: The City received a $4 million state allocation for the greenway extension to Jones Intermediate School and river restoration project. The City is currently working with easement acquisitions and hopefully by early winter this Main Street Water Line Replacement: The City received a $2 million grant to replace Westwood Industrial Park City-Owned Property: The City received a $1.5 million grant from Golden Leaf for a 16-acre tract located in Westwood Industrial Park. City staffi is working to identify the exact tract in conjunction with "Project Vista". They are hoping Westside Water & Sewer Project: The City received a $1.5 million grant from the Division of Water Infrastructure. This project has already been bid out. This project should be completed within six months after beginning to replace lines on Franklin, Oak, and Franklin Street Streetscape Project: The City received Rural Transformation Grants in the amounts of $475,000 and $487,500 and a grant through the USDA in the amount of $522,000. These grants will be used for the parking lot. Mitch Williams is working on the design for the streetscape and working with the Spencer's Hotel development and Convention Center projects as well. These are projected to be completed early spring of 2026. The water line replacement will take place first. The City is waiting for the Convention Center Project: The City received two different State allocations for a total of $15 million for this project. RFQ's were posted to the City's website today for the architect design for this project. In mid-August, D.H. Griffin should begin the demolition Balladeer Hotel Project: Private investment with the Marriott Tribute Hotel continues to advance. Christman Construction is leading this $23 million project. There is a lot of local High School. improvements. winter. renovations to the public library building. project can be put out for engineering bids. water lines along Main Street. this project will be completed in 2026. It is amazing after losing all of the manufacturing and textile mills, Mount Airy came back better than ever. It is amazing what the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, Department Heads, and City staff do for the Darren Lewis: congratulated Arlene Crotts for her years of service to the City-she is an amazing person. Also congratulated the entire City staff who make all of the grants happen. Mayor Pro Tempore Hutchens: Echoed all that has been said. The mural is a definite improvement for the community. It is nice to live in a city where good things are happening. Hannah Simmons presented the Life Save Award to: Captain Scottie Wolfe, Justin Mayes, Fire Chief, Zane Poindexter relayed that Hannah Simmons with the Surry County Medical Services reached out to him concerning a patient who wanted to meet some of the rescuers who saved him while having a cardiac emergency. Fire Captain Scottie Wolfe detailed the life saving measures taken by the Mount Airy Fire department and Surry County EMS. Scottie mentioned this is the second time someone has come back to thank him and others for what Dillon Hutchens, son of Mr. Heath, spoke about the incident and expressed his and his entire family's heartfelt gratitude to those who helped save his father's life. Mentioned that when they did tol help save their lives. going through tough times, everyone should always put their trust in God. b) Tourism Report: Jessica Roberts, Mount Airy TDA Executive Director 2 Jessica Roberts reviewed the highlights oft the Quarterly Tourism Report. Mayor Cawley declared thel Public Forum open for comments. PUBLICI FORUM: Ann Roberts, Pitman Street (city resident): Ms. Roberts complained about the overgrown corner of Pitman Street and South Main Street, which blocks the line of sight to be able to pull out onto South Main Street. She distributed a photo she took this week of the overgrowth. She is asking for the Board to help with this situation and correct this issue. Jay Roberts, Pinnacle, NC (non-city resident): Ann Roberts is his mother and he reiterated asking the Board to help with the overgrowth situation his mother spoke about. Seeing no other speakers Mayor Cawley declared the Public Forum elosed. REMARKSBY OFFICIALS: Commissioner Hutchens: Thanked the Fire Department and all City employees for everything they do-feels very fortunate to live in this City. It is nice to know that Mount Airy's Fire and Police Departments will be there in a matter of minutes when needed. Commissioner Koch: Mentioned that over the next couple of years, there will be a lot of great things happening in Mount Airy. Everyone needs to thank the City staff for making all of Commissioner Thacker: Thanked the Fire Chief for bringing the life save story to the Board Meeting-very inspiring.
