Broome County's older adults are the thread that helps maintain our social and economic vitality, which enhances the lives of all residents.The following are some of the trends in our area demonstrating the importance of becoming an Age-Friendly Broome County's 60+ population makes up 24.5% of the total population, while in New York State the 60+ population represents 20.2% of the total population. By,2025 the 60+ population will represent 30% of the Broome County population. The 45+ population generates 71% of all personal income in Broome County. 70% of Broome County homeowners age 60+ have no mortgage, meaning they have Community: more money to put into the community. In2015, Broome County volunteers age 55+ contributed 6.8 million hours of community service, estimated to be worth over $190 million. National trends: Today the entire Baby Boomer generation - nearly 75 million strong - is over age 50. Int the next three years, nearly 15 million people will tum 65. By 2030,73 million orlin5 people in the U.S. will be age 65 or older. The 50+ population controls nearly 80 % of the U.S.net worth. In2016, voters age 50+ made up 56% of the electorate. lr's vital that older voters and their needs are considered during policy planning and decision-making on all levels.
