Brown Mayor Pro Tem Council Members David Ammann Wade Wittman Dick Casey THE VILLAGE OF SUGAR MOUNTAIN 251 Dick Trundy Lane Sugar Mountain, NC 28604 June 14, 2024 On May 18, a severe thunderstorm stayed parked directly over the top of the mountain and proceeded to cause us several problems. At the town hall we recorded 1.2" of rainfall, however gauges on the upper mountain at several residences recorded in excess of5.5" of rain. This water then was directed down the drainage ways and caused significant damage to the road in the Slopesider area. It washed out nearly every attached driveway and removed several areas of asphalt in the ditches. It then continued on down to Sugar Mountain Drive where it clogged the 26 60" culverts just beyond the tennis courts and spilled over the roadway. The last area to see this torrent was the 6h hole at the golf course where the water proved to be too much for the pond drain and overspilled the dam. Luckily, there was no physical damage to the course, only on the surface with mud and debris that was cleaned up quickly. The hole was only out of play for 2 days and nowy you cannot even tell that such an event happened. We have been hard at work repairing ditches and cleaning culverts ever: since. Most of the work has been focused on Briarcliff Road, Shelter Rock Circle and Rock Spring Circle. We are shaving down the road shoulders and cleaning out every ditch back to as close to original design as possible. This creates some unsightly areas for a limited time, but we are re-seeding the areas as we, go, and as ironically as it sounds, when we get more rainfall to water the: seed it will grow back quickly. Wel have also been able to make a complete rotation on all roads with the mower and now have all the grass cut for thei first time. We also used the assistance ofa a contract crew from Triple H Services to assist int the trimming and weed eating of these areas. An application of growth regulator will now be applied, so if yousee our sprayer on the roads, this is what will be going on. We will not be applying Round-up to the roadsides, only slowing down the growth of the grass. Asy your may notice, all of the white and yellow lines have been painted. We will have to touch up several areas in the coming weeks as the paving crew completes patching. I have been made aware that they willl begin work on Wednesday the 19th on the mountain. The golf course continues to bei ini fantastic condition, and play seems to be on par with what we saw last year. We receive many compliments daily and still are getting many first-time players visiting us. appreciate thei time Iget to spend talking to these folks and enjoy hearing the feedback they provide. Ifa anyone has any questions or comments, please don't! hesitate to contact me. Respectfully submitted, Bill Daniels, Village Maintenance Director
