CITY OF SCHULENBURG SCHULENBURG, TX May, 16, 2022 The City Council of the City of Schulenburg met in regular session on Monday, May 16th, 2022, at 6:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers located at 607 Upton Avenue, Schulenburg, Texas. The elected officials present included Mayor Elaine Kocian, Aldermen Wendy Fietsam, Ben Herzik, Clarence. Ahlschlager, Larry Veselka, and Alderman Elect, Howard Stoner. City Staff present were City Administrator, Tami Walker, Chief of Police, Troy Brenek, Operations Manager, Darryl Moeller, Water/Wastewater Superintendent, Eric Cullen, and City Secretary, Mason Florus. Visitors included Darrell Vyvjala of the Schulenburg Sticker, Reverend Andrew Stafford, Mark Friedrich of The Schulenburg EDC, Joe Orsak, Irene Handley, Linda Veselka, Carmen Stoner, Mayor Kocian called role and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Reverend Stafford said a prayer over Under Presentations By Citizens, Irene Handley addressed Council. She claimed that her neighbors' lights are still affecting her cameras and the City is not doing anything about it. Under Presentations, Proclamations, and Recognitions, Mark Friedrich with the Schulenburg Economic Development Corporation presented a project to Council. The EDC is working with The Texan to erect a sign on the northeast side of their property at the corner of the 110 Feeder road and 77. The sign willl be stucco and limestone measuring 5 feet high and a little over 22 and al half feet long. The sign will read "Halfway to Everywhere" with Schulenburg" under that Alderman Veselka asked if there were going to be flagpoles. Mr. Friedrich replied that it is not confirmed but there is a plan to put two flag poles either one on each side, or both on one side of the sign. Mr. Friedrich added that the EDC is working with the Texan to install lighting to illuminate the sign. The results were as follows: Mrs. Walker read the official Canvas for the Election Returns from the May 7, 2022 General Place 3 Tina Bohlmann Howard Stoner Place 4 128 Votes 149 Votes Clarence Ahlschlager 226 Votes Place 5 Larry Veselka Randy Mican 145 Votes 130 Votes Alderman Fietsam made a motion, seconded by Alderman Ahlschlager, to officially canvas the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace, Dan Mueller, swore in Alderman Elect Howard Stoner, Alderman Ahischlager, and Alderman Veseika. Mueller then stood at the podium and said he wanted to publicly thank the Mayor, Council, Mrs. Walker, and Chief Brenek for the work they election. The motion passed unanimously. do. He stated Public Service is a tough but worthwhile" cause. Alderman Howard Stoner then replaced Alderman Herzik at the Aldermen Dais. Alderman Stoner asked Mayor if he could say a few words. Aiderman Stoner stated that it is an honor and a privilege to be elected to Council. He said he will keep an open mind and he wanted to thank Alderman Veselka and Mrs. Walker for visiting with him. He also stated that there are several issues he would like to see addressed such as the Council Chambers' recording equipment and discrepancies in the minutes. He concluded saying that he will be diligent and ask questions. Operations Manager, Darryl Moeller, reported the following to Council: Swater Department hauled 28 boxes of sludge from Babylon and the level is now at 3% feet which is a really good level. There was a 6-inch watermain leak on Paulus, they Street Department cut up ai tree on. J.A. Green Street, started cutting out the curbing on Keuper, assisted with the 6-inch main leak, and installed a pipe at a lift station. sucked sludge out of 4 lift stations, and read water meters. Parks Department did three abatements, and mowed Garbage Department hauled 26 roll-offs Electric Department performed tree trimming, assisted the County in setting a pole, set a 45-foot pole at the Nicor Building, and continued clearing easements on the Moravia Line. Moeller concluded stating that Haworth has started on the Civic Center. City Administrator, Tami Walker, stated that she wanted tot thank Mr. Ben Herzik for his time as a Council Member. She continued that on behalf of the City, she enjoyed the opportunity to work with him for the betterment of the community. Mrs. Walker also proclaimed that she would like to congratulate Alderman Stoner for being elected and Alderman Ahlschlager and Alderman Veselka for being re-elected. She concluded saying that she is looking forward to the next two years in working for Council and the citizens of Schulenburg. Mrs. Walker then reported the following to Council: May 4, met with Legion about the Ground Storage Tank at Henderson Hill. The project should be done at the end oft this month and they are coordinating with the City on beginning to fill the tank. May 5, visited with Mr. Stoner at City Hall May 6, met with Mrs. Shelby and the City Attorney May 7, covered the office from 6:00 P.M. -9:30 P.M. to post election results May 11, met with Pumps of Houston about the County Barn Lift Station. They are hoping to deliver the panel this week depending on the delivery date. Attended an EDC meeting. May 13 there was a retirement lunch for Glenn Muhlstein Mrs. Walker thanked Muhlstein for his time at the City. Glenn was parttime Cemetery Maintenance from 1992-2012 and Full-time from 2012-2021. Graduation Party and putting out the American Flags. Mrs. Walker concluded saying next week, Public Works will begin preparing Wolters Park for the Alderman Stoner asked Mr. Moeller if 28 Boxes of sludge in a month was standard. Moeller replied no, it was not done properly in past years. Alderman Stoner inquired if that is because employees were not draining properly in the past. Moeller replied yes and added he has manifests for the past two years for reference. Chief Brenek announced that we hired a couple of Officers. Jacob Mills was sworn in today and we have tentatively hired another officer on the condition that he completes the academy.
