Eric Neshanian, Irvine resident, spoke in opposition to Chief Kent's perceived association with certain individuals, and the lack of outreach City Council discussion included: discussed the importance of the program and the tools and resources it provides, including a better efforts to the Armenian community. understanding of different cultures and communities. Prepared by the City Clerk's Office 3 City Council /Great Park Meeting Minutes January 23. 2024 ANNOUNCEMENTS/COMMITTEE REPORIS/COUNCL REPORTS Mayor Khan Last week, Mayor Khan and City staff attended the United States Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C., where mayors from across the nation received updates from federal legislators and Cabinet members on issues affecting their communities. In addition, the City delegation had meetings with United States Senators Laphonza Butler and Alex Padilla, Secretary of Transportation, and Acting Secretary of Labor. The City of Irvine continues building relationships with its federal partners and hopes to ensure that available funding is directed to the On Monday, January 22, Mayor Khan held a Coffee with the Mayor event at Lakeview Senior Center to discuss the upcoming Irvine Connect bus route. Both the Mayor and Transit and Transportation Administrator Mike Davis shared information about the route and its 77 stops, some which included high schools, local shopping centers, hospitals, Irvine Spectrum, and Irvine Station. A substantial amount of information is available on social media, with more details to follow on Mayor Khan expressed appreciation to Maryam Quraishi and Eman Umer, founders of Crafting Smiles, a nonprofit organization with a mission of bringing joy and connection to hospitalized children. At the height of the pandemic, Quraishi and Umer were freshman students at Northwood High School volunteering at a local hospital, and noticed the need for increased volunteer visits and engagement with pediatric patients. Crafting Smiles uses Zoom-based workshops for hospitalized children to pursue their passions, which includes painting, pottery, and origami. Music and story time sessions are also available. Children are provided all craft materials and Amazon Fire tablets to connect to Zoom for these sessions. Owners of qualifying single-family homes and condominiums constructed in 1975 or before will soon be able to access additional funds through One Irvine's home improvement loan program. The loans can be used for projects related to critical repairs or sustainability, including solar panels. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Thursday, February 1, at 10 a.m. and must be submitted online. Funding is limited. For more information or to access the application, visit The Fair Housing Foundation, a nonprofit partner of the City dedicated to eliminating housing discrimination and promoting equal access to housing, is hosting a free workshop on Tuesday, February 13, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The event will be held via Zoom and participants must register online to participate. She further noted that her primary focus was to prioritize the well-being and interests of constituents, solve problems within the City Council's subject matter jurisdiction, and address issues that directly impact constituents; and expressed concern about issues beyond the City Council's scope. And last, Councimember Kim noted her efforts related to the City's hate crime/hate incident portal, affordable housing, housing insecurity, mental health, and language access.
