MONTH OF: February 2024 1. Lawrence Martin of Cramerton Middle School won the Gaston County Schools Spelling Bee, which was held on. January 31 at Ashbrook High School. He will compete in March at the Carolina Panthers Spelling Bee. The top four finishers in the regional bee will receive invitations to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Cassidy Allen 2. Kiser Elementary (partnered with NextGen) won the "Are You Smarter Than a Gaston County Fifth Grader?" competition. Rankin Elementary earned second place, and New Hope Elementary took third place. Sponsored by the Gaston County Education Foundation, "Are You Smarter" is a popular annual event that pairs businesses and organizations with elementary schools in a fun game show format. Proceeds go toward the Ron L. Ensley grants for teachers to fund innovative classroom lessons and projects. 3. Giselle Barr from Cramerton Middle School reçeived a Gold Key award at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her piece, "Bartholomew." Joyce Zhu of Cramerton Middle School earned an honorable mention forl her work, "Chamelieonized Chameleon." Isabella Caicedo, a senior at Stuart W. Cramer High School, was recognized with a Silver Key award for her piece, "Acceptance." Barr and Caicedo will have their artwork showcased in March at the Mint Museum in uptown Charlotte. 4. The following students were named semifinalists for the prestigious University of North Carolina Morhead-Cain Scholarship: Aissatou Diouf ofAshbrook High School and Ben 5. The Showcase and Parent Fair will bel held on Saturday, February 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Stuart W. Cramer High School. The fairwill feature 56 school booths, 24 parent sessions covering 12 topics, 21 school performances and 11 department/college information tables. During the fair, parents can sign up for choice programs, choice options, kindergarten and pre- kindergarten registration, information concerning parent portal and parents can submit a student transfer. Promotion for the showcase and parent fair has been through social media, e-mail blasts, televisionand radio commercials, print advertising and billboards, channel 21, GCS website and parent links. Enrolment/Capacity/Capital Projects Interim Superintendent Dr. Laws recognized Dr. Morgen Houchard who gave an update on mrolmem/Cpacty/cpta Projects. We are the tenth largest school district in the state with approximately 30,000 students. Some of our schools are full and some of our schools are almost at capacity. We need to start making decisions soon. We have $110 million remaining out of our $250 million bond money with six years to spend. The County is pleased with the way we are spending the money. We need to start thinking about having a third party vendor (Urban Institute at UNCC) ora planning agency to study our demographics and population and tell us about our population ini the next two to ten years.
