WELCOME: Neel Peacock, Chairperson opened the meeting and everyone introduced themselves. 3. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES (November 13, 2018): Mr. Peacock asked everyone to review the November 13, 2018, meeting minutes for approval. REVIEW OF MONTHLY BUDGET (December 2018): Ms. Welch provided handouts with summary and financial reports for the Senior Centers in Ellerbe, Rockingham and East Rockingham which encompassed the past six months. All of the Senior Centers have been very effective in providing social activities and field trips during last year. The East Rockingham and Ellerbe Senior Centers were highlighted for their diligent work in assisting seniors with LIEAP. The Rockingham Senior Center was highlighted for the popularity oft the paraffin hand wax program and the increase in participants utilizing the The Savings Report for Regular Travel revealed total year to date savings of $3,499.14 for fiscal year 2018-2019. The Savings Report for Volunteer Hours revealed 1,103.10 total hours ofservice, which equals total year to date saving of $25,989.04. Home Community Care Block Grant Monthly Report revealed year to date expenditure of 48%, which is close to the Lee. Anne Sago reported on the types of services provided to seniors during the month of December. Approximately 16: seniors were assisted in December; many with the LIEAP program and 98 applications were received for energy assistance. Ms. Sago announced beginning January 1,2019, Medicaid will begin to pay for eyeglasses again. Ms. Welch and the committee commended Ms. Sago for her commitment inj providing services to seniors. Serving as the point of contact, her presence at the senior centers has accommodated more exercise room. target goal of 50%. seniors to gain a sense of ease in addressing their concerns. 5. UPDATE ON CONTRACT FORLEGAL: SERVICES FOR OLDER AMERICANS UNDER THE HCCBG FOR FY-18-19: Twilla Allen reported on the initiative to expand legal services for seniors, to include assistance with preparing wills, denial letters, foreclosures, etc. The contract has been approved and advertisement for legal services began last week. The Legal Aid of Pittsboro services Richmond County. Nutrition sites and senior centers have been identified as location sites to reach out to senior citizens. 6. GENERAL DISCUSSION & IDEAS: Ms. Welch thanked everyone for their support with the Captain D's fundraiser event, which raised $300.58. All funds generated will go back to the. Aging Services to support senior programs. Additional fundraisers will be planned throughout the year. Alive. After 55 Supper Club marks its one year anniversary next month. The event is held every third Thursday ofthe month at 6:00pm at Hudson Brothers Deli in Rockingham. Richmond County Aging Services Advisory Council Meeting - January 31, 2019 Page 2 Dr. Jarrell commended Ms. Welch and her staff's efforts in planning monthly events and outings for the seniors. There were al large number of seniors present at the Captain D's fundraiser who indicted they enjoy the monthly activities and meeting in a group setting. Ms. Welch indicated surveys were offered to seniors to solicit their ideas for activities and trips for the upcoming year. Many surveys have been collected and will be tallied to assist in developing future programs and activities. The 55 Drive and Alive Program promotes safe driving practices, defensive driving techniques, and reviews local laws and traffic rules for drivers over the age of55. This program can also reduce car insurance premiums for seniors. The program was offered at a senior center, and Concern was raised about the lack of parking spaces at the Rockingham Senior Center. Ms. Welch noted the Pee Dee Pregnancy Resource Center does allow our clients to utilize their parking spaces, but agreed there is limited parking for the center. The trees behind the senior center have been cut to prevent large limbs from damaging property, but the stumps were not removed. As this area would increase parking, it is owned by Watson King Funeral Home. Discussion pursued about the need for a larger facility for the Rockingham Senior Center; however, additional funding is required. Fundraising events, implementing the Friends for Senior Center donation fund, seeking grants, and discussion with the County Manager were suggested ways to raise funds for a larger senior center. This topic will be revisited at the next Mr. Jackson mentioned the Habitat for Humanity received a grant to perform small home repairs for seniors. He asked the committee to pass the information on and seek any seniors in seniors would like to revisiti it. The committee will look into this further. meeting. need of small home repairs. Ms. Welch announced and distributed flyers for several upcoming events: February 4, 2019: "Living After Losing" is designed to encourage those who suffered the loss ofa loved one to share wisdom and provide support to each other. This event will be held in Hamlet at 6:30pm. February 9,2 2019: The Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group will meet from 10:00am-11:00am at the Richmond County Hospice Haven. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month and is open to all community members of Richmond, Moore, Anson, March 8, 2019: "Fifth Annual Senior Citizen Prom" will be held at the Cole Auditorium from and Montgomery counties. 6:00pm - 9:00pm. This year's theme is Under the Sea. Richmond County Aging Services Advisory Council Meeting - January 31, 2019 Page 3 March 26, 2019: "Caring for Those Living with Dementia & Managing Opioid Dependence with Older Adults" will be held at the Cole Auditorium from 8:30am-12:00pm. Admission is$ $10.00 (early registration is $5.00) for caregivers and $20.00 (early registration is $10.00) for healthcare professionals. Free registration will be offered to 25 caregivers. March 28, 2019: Veteran's Day Breakfast will be held at the Cole. Auditorium from 9:00am - 11:00am, with a guest speaker and representatives from Fort Bragg and the ROTC. April 11,2019: "Legal and Financial Planning", workshop will be held at the Cole Auditorium from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Additional information is forthcoming. "Powerful Tools for Caregivers", isas six week educational program to help family caregivers take care of themselves. Classes meet every Monday from :00pm-2:30pm, at the Hamlet Haven at the Hive is a free event sponsored by the Community Hospice of Rockingham and The Hive that allows caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer's, Dementia and cognitive impairment to socialize, share and learn from each other. Haven at the Hive meets every Wednesday from 3:00pm-4:30pm at The Hive in Rockingham. The next meeting is Senior Center beginning February 18, 2019. February 20, 2019. 7.
