TOWN OF VANCEBORO BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING Held their regular monthly meeting on August 6, 2020 at 7:00PM in the Jimmie L. Morris Boardroom I. Call to order by Mayor Chad Braxton. II. Roll call. Those Present: Mayor Chad Braxton, Alderman Steve Belrose, Alderman Keith Cannon, Alderman Thad Jones, and Alderman Dennis Smith. Those Absent: Alderman Todd McMillen. III. Invocation by Alderman Belrose. IV. Pledge of Allegiance. V. Approval of minutes from last meeting. Alderman Smith made a motion to approve minutes. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones and carried. Vote 4-0. VI. Approval of Cash Receipts and Disbursements. Alderman Smith made a motion to pay bills. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones and carried. Vote 4-0. VII. Public Hearing - Zoning Ordinance Change - Elks Park. Andre King. - 155 Morningside Drive wanting to inquire ofwho would be in charge of painting the sign at Elks Park. Mayor. Braxton stated that the developer would spruce everything up including the sign. Mr. King also stated that the driveways Alderman Smith made a motion to close the Public Hearing. Motion was seconded Alderman Smith made a motion to adopt the Variance for Elks Park. Motion was Police Report was presented by ChiefJenkins. Our Coffee with a Cop was cancelled on August 4t" due to the first Hurricane of the season. The next one will bel held on September 1"a at Vera's Diner. The 2007 Dodge Charger was sold for $2,500. Birthdays this month include: Pernell Fields, Michael Anthony and Alderman Keith Cannon. We have had an offer on our Street Sweeper of $1,500. Ifthel board wants to act upon it, itwould be sold as is. The Colorado work truck will also be advertised at $500. Our new Public Works truck is getting outfitted this week. Thanks to ChiefJenkins for installing the cb radios in the new truck. Through the Cares Act which was given to Craven County, the town will receive $16,550 to help with the fight against COVID-19. The Town was awarded $15,000 to help with Phase II of the Richard W. Bowers Park from the Bate Foundation. We also have the $20,000 from Craven County which was awarded last year to help with this phase. Alderman McMillen and Ihave met with the outfitters for the playground and hopefully this should bei in the process soon. Library hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come out and support our local library. Ispoke at the Vanceboro Rotary Club meeting this month. The executive order was extended for another five weeks which affects the reopening of the basketball court. Craven County Schools will be operating on a remote learning schedule for the first nine weeks of school. Repairs on a few streets throughout Town should begin in October. Sidewalk curbing/edging will also be taking place soon throughout Town. The Town will contact our contractor that does our ditch work and get a quote. Monday at 6 p.m. our Mayor and Board of Alderman will be touring the Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants. Wel have had an offer from a person interested inj purchasing property at the end of Arnold Street for $500. Town Hall will be closed on September 7th in observance ofLabor Day. Next Board of Alderman meeting will be held on September14", at 8 p.m. Thanks Alderman Smith for spraying around Elks Park. Wesurvived our first Hurricane of the year and only had 34 inch of rain. Winds were rough at times and it'll take a few weeks to get all the limbs picked up around Town. Garbage will be picked up on Saturday this week; they are running a day behind because of the storm. The line for the flagpole is broken at Vanceboro Cemetery, Lilly's Excavating will be coming to repair this soon and put up a new flag. Our Town banners need some work done to them as well. Recycling pickup will be on August 20th. We received $612.90 through Debt Setoff this month. We collected the money for the 2007 Dodge Charger this month. Mr. Overton with Carr Riggs & Ingram would like to start doing consulting for the Town after this audit and will help find the' Town: a new auditor to audit the next fiscal year. IX. Alderman Reports. Alderman Belrose was glad to see minimal damage during the storm and to see Alderman Cannon stated that he wanted to appreciate Becky Hughes for organizing an Internet Café at the Vanceboro United Methodist Church to help assist 18 children with their studies as parent have to work and are finding it difficult to meet their obligations. This will take place Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A candidate has been selected for the position at the library but has not been finaled yet.
