TOW OF VANCEBORO BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING Held their regular monthly meeting on December 7, 2020 at 8:00 PM in the Jimmie L. Morris Boardroom I. Call to order by Mayor Chad Braxton. II. Roll call. Those Present: Mayor Chad Braxton, Alderman Steve Belrose, Alderman Keith Cannon, Alderman Thad Jones, Alderman Todd McMillen and Alderman Dennis Smith. III. Invocation by Alderman Smith. IV. Pledge of Allegiance. V. Approval of minutes from last meeting. Alderman Smith made a motion to approve minutes. Motion was seconded by Alderman McMillen and carried. Vote 5-0. VI. Approval of Cash Receipts and Disbursements. Alderman McMillen made a motion to pay bills. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones and carried. Vote 5-0. VII. Police Report. The Department has completed their yearly firearm certification training and policy review. The officers worked security for the ABC Board through Thanksgiving. Please keep your car doors locked, there has been some break-ins occurring in the community. Officer Baker completed his training and is now working on his own. Wes should have the new police car by Christmas, it is getting outfitted now. VIII. Mayor's Report. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and got to spend time with their family. Birthdays this month include Alderman Thad Jones. Johnny Sampson, Craven County Commissioner for about twenty years passed away this month. Retired Public Works employee Willie Edwards passed away a few days ago. Willie will be missed at all of the stores in town where he spent a lot of time visiting and talking. We will miss him in this community. Our hearts go out to the family of these individuals. Our 7th Annual Tree. Lighting service went well considering it was downscaled due to COVID-19. We appreciate everyone that helped to make this possible in any way. Hopefully next year it can be back to normal, with the schools being invited and participating. Ihad a chance to read to the children at the library. Hope you all will stop by and support our local library. Iattended a New Bern podcast regarding the Readiness Boot Camp that Mr. Greg Singleton of Craven Community College will be phasing into our: area beginning in January 2021. This is a great opportunity for this community and hope it is well attended. Phone Tree has phased out and we upgraded to a new system called Call Multiplier. It generates the calls to the residents much quicker, ifyou'd like to have your phone number added to the list please contact the Town Hall at (252)2 244- 0919. Recycling will be picked up on December 10th. Garbage will be collected one day later for Christmas week and New Year's week, which will be Saturday. Anniversary of Pearl Harbor is today, there are two veterans' that are still alive that experienced this ordeal. Christmas meal for our town employees will be December 22"d at the VFW. Town Hall will be closed in observance of Christmas on December 23"d, 24th and 28th. The Town Clerk and I were on a conference call with FEMA regarding reimbursement for the limbs picked up after Hurricane Isaias. Zoning and Planning Board will be meeting on Thursday night. Public Works has a new employee, Jason Blackwood that brings great knowledge to the Town. Edging, sidewalks and ditch work has been completed throughout town. IX. 2021 Board of Alderman Schedule/2021 Holiday Schedule. Alderman Smith made a motion to adopt the 2021 Board of Alderman Schedule as corrected. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones and carried. Vote 5-0. Alderman Jones made a motion to adopt the 2021 Holiday Schedule. Motion was seconded by Alderman Cannon and carried. Vote 5-0. X. Alderman Reports. Alderman Belrose commented on possibly changing the Blue Law on Sunday to allow All oft the Board of Alderman agreed to have a Public Hearing at the next scheduled board meeting on January 4, 2021 in the Jimmie L. Morris Boardroom at 8 p.m. Alderman Cannon stated that his thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Willie Edwards and Johnny Sampson. Vanceboro United Methodist Church will be holding their live nativity on December 18th and 19th in the vacant lot beside Kite's from 61 to 8 businesses to sell alcohol at 1 p.m. p.m. The library has hired an assistant, Brenda Lewis. Alderman Jones had no comment. Alderman McMillen stated that the work on the playground has begun. Should be finished by Wednesday. He suggested that we ask civic groups in the area to donate Alderman Smith stated that the Vanceboro Voluntary Fire Department cancelled their dinner this year due to COVID-19. He also stated that he would be meeting with the guy benches for the playground. regarding the fencing for the playground area. XI. Public Comment. No Public Comments. XII. Adjournment.
