TOWN OF VANCEBORO BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING Held their regular monthlymeeting on January 4, 2021 at 8:00PM in the. Jimmie L. Morris Boardroom I. Call to order by Mayor Chad Braxton. II. Roll call. Those Present: Mayor Chad Braxton, Alderman Steve Belrose, Alderman Keith Cannon, Alderman Thad Jones, Alderman Todd McMillen and Alderman Dennis Smith. III. Invocation by Alderman Jones. IV. Pledge of Allegiance. V. Approval of minutes from last meeting. Alderman Belrose made a motion to approve minutes as corrected. Motion was seconded by Alderman McMillen and carried. Vote5 5- VI. Approval of Cash Receipts and Disbursements. Alderman Smith made a motion to pay bills. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones and carried. Vote 5-0. VII. Public Hearing - Sunday Alcohol Sales. Alderman Jones made a motion to open the Public Hearing on the Proposed Sunday Alcohol Sales. Motion was seconded by Alderman There being no comments on the Proposed Sunday Alcohol Sales from the public Alderman McMillen made a motion to close the Public Hearing. Motion was seconded by Alderman Belrose made a motion to repeal the Sunday Alcohol Sales effective at 1 p.m. 0. Belrose and carried. Vote 5-0. Alderman Smith and carried. Vote 5-0 on Sundays. Motion was seconded by Alderman Smith and carried. The votes were as follows: Alderman Belrose-Yes Alderman Cannon 1- Yes Alderman Jones-) Yes Alderman McMillen - Yes Alderman Smith - Yes VIII. Police Report. The department continued working security through Christmas at the ABC Store. We assisted with the tree lighting at the Town Hall. There has been one car broken into in our area, make sure to keep your doors locked to avoid being an easy target. We have had several drugs collected as part of routine traffic stops. Wewould like to honor our School Resource Officer. James Herring on his wonderful job he is doing with thel kids at Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School. He has gone above and beyond tol help the school and to build a report with the children. IX. Mayor's Report. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Birthdays this month include Public Works employee Tevin Long and Public Works Supervisor Vernon Edwards. Vernon has been with the Town for 44 years and we would like to take this time to thank him for his hard work and dedication. Deaths this month include John King of College Street, Mark Basnight, Senate Majority Leader and Lonnie Pridgen, once served a Craven County Commissioner and a real estate developer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families. The limbs have been removed from our temporary debris site at the WWTP. We should be receiving reimbursement funds from FEMA for Hurricane Isaias soon. The pipe at Highway 17 and Grand Avenue has been repaired, saving the Town $35K that had been budgeted for the project. Playground has been opened at thel Richard W. Bowers Park. Thank you Alderman McMillen for your hard work with this phase of the park. O'Reilly's opened up Saturday; it is great tol have an auto parts store here locally. Thanks to Town Clerk Beverly Drake for her hard work with all the paperwork for FEMA. Thanks to Assistant Clerk Brittany Mumford for her work, the Town Staffi is better than it's ever been. January 7th, will be the next recycling day. Town Hall will be closed on January 18th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Next scheduled board meeting will be on February 1*t. The Planning and Zoning Board should be at the next meeting. Library lease between the Town and Craven County has been completed. The County has installed a new HVAC system already. Congratulations to Craven County Commissioner Jason Jones elected to Chairman of Craven County Commissioners. Decorations throughout Town will be taken down tomorrow. Housing market is going well right now, would love to see the vacant properties throughout Town being occupied. X. Alderman Reports. Alderman Belrose stated that he would love to see the Town plant something in front of Alderman Cannon stated that he wasn't sure if the Vanceboro Strawberry Festival would happen this year due to the COVID. The bulletin board out on Highway 43 now has lights on it promoting the festival. The library will be having a zoom meeting; information will be online on their Facebook page. Would like to see the' Town look into making the land more stable behind the Police Department and Town Hall. Alderman Jones would like to see the manhole at College Street and Mill Road lowered to street level or built up to keep cars from running overi it.
