TOWN OF VANCEBORO BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING Held their regular monthly meeting on August 2, 2021 at 8:00PM in the. Jimmie L. Morris Boardroom I. Call to order by Mayor Chad Braxton. II. Roll call. Those Present: Mayor Chad Braxton, Alderman Keith Cannon, Alderman Thad Jones, and Alderman Todd McMillen. Absent: Alderman Steve Belrose and Alderman Dennis Smith. III. Invocation by Alderman Cannon. IV. Pledge of Allegiance. V. Approval of minutes from last meeting. Alderman McMillen made a motion to approve minutes. Motion was seconded by Alderman Jones and carried. Vote: 3-0. VI. Approval of Cash Receipts and Disbursements. Alderman Jones made a motion to pay bills. Motion was seconded by Alderman Cannon and carried. Vote 3-0. VII. Police Report. National Night Out and the Back to School Bash will be held this Saturday, August 7h from 61 to 9 p.m. in the vacant lot beside Kite's Supermarket. This event is a free event for the community. We will have bouncy houses, hot dogs, water, games and a deejay to host the event. We will be scheduling checkpoint stations for September and November and will be inviting other departments to assist. Sergeant Keys will be completing his radar training in December. Officer Baker has completed his radar training and should be through with field training soon. Sheriff Danny Heath passed away today, our hearts go out to this family. Peddler license are now orange which makes it easier for the officers to check. The Town may want to inquire of our attorney regarding an ordinance for sweepstake businesses being within a 1000 foot radius ofa VIII. Clerk- Rezoning property at 8401 Main Street. A public hearing has been scheduled for the September 13, 2021 Board of Alderman meeting at 8 p.m. to rezone property located at 8401 Main Street. This property is currently zoned as R8 and the owner is asking for church. it to be rezoned as Commercial. IX. Mayor's Report. Birthdays this month include. Alderman Keith Cannon, Public Work Employees Pernell Fields and Chris Edwards. Deaths this month include: Sheriff Danny Heath, John Lilly, Clay Ellis and Harley Ringer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families. Next Town Board meeting will be held September 13+. The Town Hall will be closed on September 6" in observance ofLabor Day. Recycling pickup will be on August 19th. Back to School Bash/Vanceboro Night Out will be August 7t from 6 to 9 p.m. Vanceboro Strawberry (Jam) Festival will be on October 2"d. Wheel Deal Auto is now a Husqvarna dealer. Zoning permits have been issued for eleven (11) lots in Elks Park. This should increase our tax base by 2.5 million dollars. Craven County Clean Sweep will be cleaning this Saturday, August 7th along Streets Ferry Road. In regards to anonymous letters being sent to myself and the Board of Alderman, there will be no response made unless the person is willing to sign thel letters or show up in person to the meetings to voice their concerns. Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary principal has resigned his position. Filters on the outside of our water and wastewater plants have been cleaned, there is still parts inside that has to be completed. X. Alderman Reports. Alderman Cannon stated that the Vanceboro Strawberry (Jam) Festival will be on October 2"d. There will be a parade and vendors as usual and there will be: a few bouncy houses and things for children to do. The event should conclude around 3 p.m. Library Board approved their budget for $133,397. Story Walk will be held on August 3rd at the lot beside Kite's Supermarket. Friends of thel Library are working on the little library houses that are similar to the blessing boxes throughout the area that provides free food items. The library donated $200 for an Eagle Scout project which will be a tech van. During storms and power outages of significance this tech van could be used to provide internet capabilities. Director Katherine Clowers has been applying for grants for the library and has helped the library receive $137,000 in grant money. The library has hot spots that can be checked out and they now have a 52" television.
