TOWN OF VANCEBORO BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING Held their regular monthly meeting on August 7, 2023 at 7:00PM in the Jimmie L.. Morris Boardroom I. Call to order by Mayor Chad Braxton. II. Roll call Those Present: Mayor Chad Braxton, Alderman Steve Belrose, Alderman Keith Cannon, Alderman Thad Jones, Alderman Russell Ipock, and Alderman Todd McMillen. III. Invocation by Alderman Belrose. IV. Pledge of Allegiance. V. Approval of minutes from last meeting. Alderman Ipock made a motion to approve minutes. Motion was seconded by Alderman McMillen and carried. Vote 5-0. VI. Approval of Cash Receipts and Disbursements. Alderman Jones made a motion to pay bills. Motion was seconded by Alderman Ipock and carried. Vote 5-0. VII. Public Comment. Cj Simmons and Tony Bullock- Prospective buyers of 8514 Main Street would like tol have the property rezoned from a R8 to R10. The plan would be to add 16 units of townhouses with each having 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a garage. VIII. Police Report was presented by Chief] Keys. National Night Out was a very successful event. We received nothing but positive feedback. Next year's event is sure to be bigger and better. I'd like to thank the Mayor and our Aldermen who attended the event. We had many school supplies donated. These supplies were given to Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School. The fishing tournament was also successful despite the bad weather. We're still waiting on paperwork to come back from training and standards before we can get another officer hired. Sgt. Sheldon just completed radar training. Once he finishes his training hours, all three of us will be radar certified. IX. Mayor's Reports. Birthdays this month are Alderman Cannon, and public works employees Chris Edwards and Pernell Fields. Rusty Woolard passed away this month. He had a big impact on the Craven County area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. National Night Out went well and was well attended. The prison tank has been finished. The building at the prison with the pumps and equipment was also due for some: maintenance. It has been painted and looks very good. Beverly will be returning to work next week on the 17th. Craven County Sheriff Department contacted me last month about the EZ Pass Tobacco Store here in town. $5000 ofi illegal drug paraphernalia was found inside the business. Please be mindful ofany youth you may see. Edging and curbing will be done around November. Street paving should be completed tomorrow.Iattended the CRC meeting. The prison currently has 42 job vacancies. Open interviews are the second Tuesday of each month with a $7000 sign on bonus. Is spoke with Duke Energy about power outages in our area. They will be cutting out 14 dead trees that might cause potential problems. We are looking into getting a generator at the water plant. Next board meeting will be September 11th.Town Hall will be closed on September 4th. Next recycle is August 17th. X. Alderman Reports. Alderman Cannon thanked the Chief and police department for a fine job with National Night Out. Friends of the library movie night seems to continue to grow. Michelle Gaskins has put in her resignation. Ia am sad to see her go. Ifyou know anyone in that field ofwork that may be interested let them know. Vanceboro Rescue Squad volunteer Richard Morris passed away. Prayers go out to the family. Alderman Belrose had no comment. Alderman Ipock questioned ifl Michelle Gaskins position at the library was full time. Alderman Jones thanked the Chief for his hard work with National Night Out. The prison called me and mentioned they are in need of a plumber. Please pass the word. Alderman McMillen stated he met with an electrician about the picnic shelter. An estimate will be getting worked up. Ihad a conversation with the daycare about what children like to play on. Iwould like to add more to the playground in the near future. The Christian Help Center has made al lot of great improvements. They will XI. Public Works. Vernon Edwards commended Cornelius Bradley for his help with getting the prison tank back up. He came out many nights at 12 and 1 in the morning to monitor things. It was greatly appreciated.
