Report to Village Council April 14, 2023 The Police Department is running smoothly. As of3/31/2023 we are down to four (4) Officers. Officer Buchanan and Officer Guinn are working the night shift. Officer Brown andI are working the day shift. SMPD will still provide 24/7 coverage. lam looking forward to getting Madison Hicks and' Wayne Miller started full time training once they graduate from Basic Law Enforcement Training on May 12th, Depending on the Field Training and Certification Ih hope to have the Police Department back to a normal schedule soon as possible. Iwant to thank all of our Officers for a job well done throughout the winter season. Without their dedication to the Village my. job would be much harder. Madison Hicks and Wayne Miller attended Intox EC/IR II training in March. Both Miller and Hicks once sworn are now certified to operate the Intox EC/IR II Instrument that measures and detects alcohol in a person breath for collecting evidence in Driving While Impaired arrest. The Village of Sugar Mountain Police Department has received a provisional registration to the NC Community College System and Apprenticeship NC, Apprentice Training Program. Madison Hick will be the first Apprentice at Sugar Mountain Police Department. Sugar Mountain Police Department is the first Agency in Avery County to be approved for the program. Fifty Percent of the apprentice salary will be reimbursed to the Village for up to two (2) years. Manager Phillips and lare still learning the process to get the reimbursements. This program is composed of over 7,000 individuals involved in training the workforce of tomorrow. On 3/7/2023 a sexual assault was reported to the Lexington County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina. The Sexual Assault alleged to have occurred in Sugar Mountain some days prior. After conducting interviews, and collection of evidence, the Investigation has been closed at the request of the person who reported the incident. Ihave sent a letter of Commendation to the Columbia South Carolina Police Chief for the invaluable assistance from Investigator Trevor Petoskey with this investigation. On 3/11/2023 Officer Brown Investigated Damage to Property at Sugar Mountain Resort. After receiving report of snowmaking equipment being moved and turned off. Officer Brown arrested a female subject who admitted to tampering with the snowmaking equipment. The female was taken to the Avery County Detention Center and given a $1000 secure bond by the Avery County Magistrate. Iwill be attending a NC Criminal Justice Training and Standard Workshop at Western Piedmont Community College on April 25th and 26th. With all the new rule changes in officer certification paperwork, I believe this will be a very valuable training. Officer Brown and Iwill be attending RADAR recertification at the end oft the month.
