Play! has slowed following the Labor Day holiday weekend. Throughout the month of September, the course will be busy with several tournaments. From the opening day of April 21st through August 31st we have seen an increase of $40,559 or 8.6% in revenue in comparison to the same period of April through August 2023. There have been 12,634 rounds played this season in comparison to The Annual Sugar Mountain Golf Classic was held Saturday and Sunday, August 26th and 27th, with sixty- two players competing in four flights. The tournament was called on Sunday after seven holes of play due to rain. The seven holes completed on Sunday were added to the Saturday round scores for a cumulative total to determine the winners. The overall Club Champion with ai first round score of 66 and a +1 second round, was Christian Baily of Boone. The Ladies Champion with ai first round: score of71 and a +1 second round was Mary Helen Treece from Monroe, NC. Thank you to all oft the sponsors of the event. Tennis: Tennis has also seen many new players this season and, much like Golf, had al busy) July and August and a decrease in play since Labor Day. Since opening for the 2023 Season on May 15th through August 315t, we have seen an increase in revenue of $1,093 in comparison to the same period in 2022. Tourism Development Authority (TDA) Board Meeting: The TDA Board met on' Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Robin Morgan, Director of the Avery County Chamber of Commerce, attended the meeting to introduce herself as the new director fort the chamber and to present the new membership options to the Board. The Board will continue discussion of the membership options at the October meeting. The Board approved Budget Amendment #1 in the amount of $45,0001 for the purchase of decorative lighting in the GolfandTennis Club parking area. Thel Board also approved funding for the Sugar Mountain Resort Winter Music lineup and a full page advertisement in the Our State magazine. Several options were discussed regarding the. July 4, 2024, fireworks display, and a decision will be made following discussion with the The. July 2023 collections of the occupancy tax showed a decrease of 7% in comparison to July 2022. The occupancy tax collections for the period August 2022 through July 2023 ($873,097) have shown a $170,192 or1 16.31% decrease in comparison to the same period of2022 ($1,043,289).  12,362 in this same periodi in 2022. Administrative Matters:  Iwould like to welcome David Buchanan to the Village as our new police officer. David has previous years of experience in law enforcement; most recently employed with the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department. His employment with the Village commenced on September 6th.
