WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is a disease that currently can'tl be prevented, slowed or cured; and WHEREAS, every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's, which could result in ane estimated 210,000 North Carolina residents living with the disease by 2025, 16.7% increase; and WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in North Carolina, and kills more WHEREAS, the total cost in 2020 of caring for those in the United States with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias is estimated at $305 billion. By 2050, these costs could rise as high as $1.1trillion; and WHEREAS, Medicare and Medicaid are expected to cover $206 billion or 67% oft the total health care and long-term care payments for people with Alzheimer's or other dementias, representing a significant WHEREAS, despite the contributions to coverage made by Medicare and Medicaid, individual out-of- pocket spending is expected to reach $661 billion or 22% oftotal payments this year, a staggering financial WHEREAS, family caregivers provide approximately 18.61 billion unpaid hours of care, with 35% of dementia caregivers reporting that their own health has gotten worse due to care responsibilities; and WHEREAS, it isi imperative that there be greater public awareness of this serious public health crisis.
