The Hope Mills Historic District is registered on the 2 2 3 National Register of Historic Places. This is not the same thing as establishing a historic district pursuant to G.S. Chpts. 60D-303.160D-942. and 160D-944. AN National Register District may allow building owners to get tax credits for rehabilitation work, but the designation does not affect their ability to use their properties. TOWN OF HOPE MILLS HISTORIC DISTRICT Where Are We Now? 2 - 3 With the establishment of the historic district pursuant to the General Statutes, building owners can only make changes to the exteriors of their buildings with a certificate of appropriateness issued by a fully operational Historic Preservation Commission. Ac certificate of appropriateness can only be issued if the Historic Preservation Commission (once reinstated) finds, through a quasi-judicial hearing, that the proposed work is consistent with the design guidelines for the district. TOWN OF HOPE MILLS HISTORIC DISTRICT Updates What Has Taken Place So Far? D a e a The Historic Commission was decommissioned to a committee but is exploring reinstatement.
