THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS OF CHATHAM COUNTY  MINUTES June 24, 2024  In-Person Meeting / 1117 Eisenhower Drive, Suite FI Multipurposeroom  BOARD MEMBERS:  Thomas J. Mahoney Chairman Marianne Heimes - Vice Chair James Hall- absent Trish) Brown Glynda Jones Billy Wooten, Director Shanta Scarboro, Deputy Director thel Pledge of Allegiance.  STAFF: CALLTOORDER: CHAIR ADDRESS:  Tom Mahoney called the meeting to order at 12:001 P.M. He gave an Invocation and led Mr. Mahoney welcomed everyone to the meeting. He requested ar motion to excuse James Hall from the meeting due to a prior engagement. Ms. Heimes made the motion, seconded by Ms. Jones. The vote was unanimous to excuse Mr. Hall from the meeting.  CERTIFICATION:  June 18 General Primary Runoff  Mr. Wooten told the Board that as small election like this runoff provided the perfect opportunity to explain to the Board how elections are balanced. He described the various recaps that are reviewed and compared to balance an election andi illustrated: how certain numbers may not match but are still correct. His example was the number of check-ins in aj precinct versus ther number of ballots cast. A voter may checki ini tot their precinct and then decide not to cast their ballot, causing the check-in number tol be higher than the cast ballot number att that precinct. Allt these details and perceived discrepancies are accounted for and balanced before the certification meeting takes place. Mr. Wooten also touched ont the close race in the runoff; the margin was not close enough to trigger an automatic recount and Mr. Wooten spoke tot the Motion by Ms. Jones, seconded by Ms. Heimes to certify the results oft the. June 18 General Primary Runoff. There was no further discussion, and the runoff  challenger about this. was unanimously approved. No members of the public were present.  PUBLICCOMMENT: ADJOURNMENT:  Ms. Jones motioned to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Ms. Heimes. The vote was  unanimous, and the meeting was adjourned at 12:101 PM.
