A Special/Workshopi Meeting was held on April 26, 2023. This was ani informal workshop held to get together with school officials to discuss the future of the Community Center building. The formalities of opening with the roll call and adjourning the meeting were foregone. Present from Meyersdale Borough: Mr. Ackerman, Mr. Folk, Mrs. Gnagey, Mrs. Knieriem and Mr. Parisi. Mr. Baer, Mr. Baker, Mayor Smith and Solicitor Valentine were absent. Present from the Meyersdale Area School District: Dr. Tracey Karlie, Superintendent, Mrs. Shannon Brant - Business Manager, and Mr. Ron Donaldson, Chairman School Board Buildings Committee. Others in attendance: Mr. Jeffrey Christner It was reported that the building isi in need of extensive repairs and the utilities, especially heating expense is becoming al huge problem for the Borough. Councill has been entertaining the idea of vacating the building and acquiring a smaller, energy efficient facility. The main concern int taking this route ist that the building will. revert back tot the school after itis no longer being used as a community building per deed dated October 1, 1974 (see attached) and State code. The Borough does not want to burden the school with the vacate property. Itv was pointed out that in order to renovate the building and! bring iti into compliance would cost an estimated The Vietnam/Korean Memorial that is located in the front oft the building is also a concern. Everyone in attendance was in agreement that the memorial isa a sacred structure that should be preserved and the first priority would be to finda a solution to make sure that it can remain in this location. The Borough Solicitor will be instructed to research the possibility of! having the memorial area surveyed and conveyed to the Vietnam/Korean Memorial Committee and to work with Mr. Donaldson through e-mail communications. Aftera aj productive discussion both parties agreed that the Solicitor for the Borough and the Solicitor for the School would bei instructed to consult with one another to work out a solution that would be best for both parties Everyone was in agreement that whatever is decided to do with the building, it would require public meetings, engineering and at least a five year plan.
