This equipment will provide the WCFC with the ability to recover additional perishable food, feed more people, and allow longer shelf-life for the food. The WCFC currently recovers food from 21 food rescue sources. In fiscal year 2022, WCFW recovered 470,000 pounds of food that otherwise would have entered the Pennsylvania waste stream. The capturing of this food resulted in feeding approximately 25,000 families (single parent families, persons with disabilities, elderly and veterans) residing in the Environmental Justice areas identified in the West Chester Area School District, West Chester, and surrounding areas. FRIG EJ GRANT PROJECT UPDATE FRIG Recycling Grant Project: Second Harvest Food Bank requested and is recommended for $47,488 in grant funding for pallet jacks to assist in distributing donated food to citizens in Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne Counties. This distribution network encompasses a remarkable 28 identified Environmental Justice areas. Annually, Second Harvest distributes over 11 million pounds of food to their network of approximately 200 non-profit agencies. Last year, 41% of this food was fresh produce, perishable protein, and fresh dairy. This resulted in 1.9 million pounds of food that was rescued from being disposed at a landfill. The Second Harvest network serves more than 80,000 people each month. Their stated mission is to obtain food and distribute it to people in need through area non-profits and to provide resources for education and advocacy to end hunger. They provide nutritious food, offer nutrition education, advocate to end food insecurity, dismantle barriers to create access, and work to attain food justice. 902 EJ GRANT PROJECT UPDATE 902 Recycling Grant: 902 Grants - Eligibility - Municipalities - 90% approved costs Awarded $16.3 million on July 1, 2023 (PaB) 80 Grant Awards (develop and implement recycling programs) 39 of the 80 Projects identified as impacting EJ Area's Recycling Education - Translation Expand Curbside Recycling Collection Recycling Drop-off Collection Locations Leaf & Yard Waste Collection and Processing Recycling Processing 902 EJ GRANT PROJECT UPDATE 902 Recycling Grant Project: Dauphin County was awarded $55,354 for funding a County-wide recycling education program (translation). The recycling education will be used to educate County residents, including programs in schools and libraries that have been identified in Environmental Justice Areas. The recycling education program includes writing a recycling book that will also be translated into Spanish. This book will be made available to all County residents. Dauphin County's identified EJ areas are bilingual and diverse. The benefits will be received through community recycling education and an antil-littering campaign in all EJ areas. 902 EJ GRANT PROJECI UPDATE 902 Recycling Grant Project: Lawrence County was awarded $42,778 for the funding of recycling educational advertising and recycling fact sheet development and printing costs (translation). The recycling education program will target the Environmental Justice communities in Lawrence County that are comprised of six (6) census tracts located predominately in the City of New Castle. The average poverty rate for these six tracts is 41% with an average minority population of 27%. These communities have often felt overlooked, especially regarding issues of recycling and the proper management of waste. Illegal dumping, littering, lack of proper waste/recycling management, and high recycling contamination rates are problematic. Recycling education is vital to educating these communities. The Lawrence-Mercer Recycling Solid Waste Department have been working closely with these communities to address the illegal dumping and litter cleanups.
