City Hall Fayette, Alabama June 12,2 2018 A regular meeting oft the City Council oft the City of Fayette met at 5:00 o'clock, p.m. on. June 12, Upon roll call the following were found to be present: Mayor Ray Nelson, Councilmembers Linda McCraw, Eddy Campbell, Jason Cowart, Cedric Wilson and Jerry Nichols. Also present were Police Chief Danny Jenkins, City Attorney Dale Lawrence, City Clerk Dawn Clapp, Fire Chief Tony 2018, int the Council Chambers ofthe City Hall. Ellis and City Engineer Dewaynel Roby. Thec opening prayer was given by Mr. Rick McCabe. Mayor Ray Nelson announced a quorum was present and the meeting was open for the transaction ofb business. GUEST APPEARING BEFORE COUNCIL 1. RONI MORRIS AND/ ANITA MORRIS Mr. Ron] Morris and] Mrs. Anita Morris spoke to the Council concerning their new business. They plan to open in late July. Mr. Morris will be offering pottery classes for adults, children and church groups. Mrs. Anita Morris will also offer cooking classes. The business is located on 15t Avenue NE across from thel Prater Real Estate Company. 2. SECURITYSYSTEM City Clerk] Dawn Clapp reported on security for City Hall and the new security system. She stated Monday through Friday the front door will be open and the back door locked. She stated the cost oft the security system was $5,245.00 and the cost of the ballistic glass was $17,136.00 for a total of $22,381. Shes said the municipal court would pay $6,906.50 and the City would pay $15,474.501 toward the project. Mrs. Cathy Robertson spoke to the Council regarding her new business Fannie's. Cathy Robertson, Toni Robertson and Laura Killingsworth are the owners of the business. The business is named in honor of Laura Killingsworth's late mother, Fannie Taylor. Upon the motion being seconded by Councilmember Cowart, thes same was unanimously approved. POLICE] DEPARTMENT REPORT Police Chief Danny Jenkins presented the police report for the month of May 2018. The report Chief Jenkins reported on Sunday, May 10th, the City phone system att thel EOC building was hit by lightning. He stated iti is still in the process of being repaired. He stated the Police Department also After talking with the City Clerk about security at City Hall, Chief Jenkins stated he had investigatedi the cost ofa" "walk through" metal detector. It would cost approximately $5,500.00. Fire Chief Tony Ellis presented the fire report for the month of May 2018. The Fire Department Mayor Nelson stated this was Fire Chief Tony Ellis's last meeting before his retirement. Chief Ellist thanked the Mayor and City Council and the firemen with whom he had served. MUNICIPAL HOUSING CODE ABATEMENT BOARDI REPORT City Engineer Dewayne Roby reported ont the May 14" meeting oft the Municipal Housing Code REPORT ONJ HIRINGO OF FIRE CHIEF ANDI MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT Mayor Nelson stated he would like for the entire Council toi interview the applicants for the Fire Chief position. There are two applicants. Interviews will be held Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. Under $2-14.1 of the City's Code of Ordinances, the Mayor must obtain the consent ofa Mayor Nelson stated there are four applicants for the maintenance assistant position. ALABAMAS SAFEST CITIES REPORT WEST ALABAMA WORKS PROGRAM Mayor Nelson reported on the West Alabama Works Program. He said Fayette County leaders and representatives of West Alabama Works met onl May 231d to discuss expanding programs that would benefit the Fayette community. One, the Adult Ready-To-Work program was modified by industries in West Alabama soi it could be offered at the high school level and it will be expanded into Fayette County The Region 3 Workforce Development Council, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, formed West Alabama Works to lead workforce development efforts throughout West Alabama. The regional workforce development system facilitates and implements a comprehensive, coordinated, seamless workforce development system for the region and supports workforce training High School this upcoming fall. activities. WASTEWATER PLANT PUMPI EVALUATION At the special meeting of the Council on May 7, 2018, the Council and Water Works Board agreed to contract with an engineering firm to evaluate the problems with the pumping station at the old industrial park. After reviewing the proposals, City Engineer Dewayne Roby recommended the City contract with H & DI Engineers to perform the evaluation. H & D proposed to perform the work fora Councilmember Cowart moved the City contract with H& DI Engineers to evaluate the problems with the pumping station at the old industrial park and pay one-half of their fee. Upon the City Clerk Dawn Clapp reported for the month of May, the City received $212,769.00 in non- designated sales tax. She reported the %g sales tax for the hospital generated $35,408.00. The total sales tax received was approximately $245,484.00. She statedt the City received $6,220.00 in alcohol taxes.
