Ia am in agreement with her comments. Iwould also like to add that best practices for lawn care be addressed. Ido: not know what lawn maintenance Doug Tallamy in his most récent book, Nature's Best Hope, advocates for us to decrease our lawns by 50%, 20 million acres. This is a fourth of all the combined acreage of the National Parks. Maintenance of lawns can cause environmental harm- use of precious water, toxic fertilizers, polluting mowing and little support of native habitat, such as ground nesting of native bees. In addition to the untoward effects of mowing, maintenance of lawns contributes in other ways. For example- Irrigation- 8 billion gallons/yr of water (30% of all water used in the East during the entails for Little Compton. summer) is used fori irrigation Fertilizers- 40-60% ends up in surface and ground water, including nitrogen and phosphorus, 2 main components of fertilizers. (Phosphorus has been banned in detergents). Some chemicals are carcinogenic, some of which are banned in Europe SUGGESTIONS Use native seed mixes ("Over two to four years, annual overseedings of Wildflower Farm's Eco-Lawn, a hard-wearing fescue blend, will convert your traditional lawn") which require less maintenance and Not all of the lawn in LC needs to be maintained as playing fields. Let some of the grass grow. Substitute with ground covers, such as wild strawberry, violets. Link below to article from the Wall mowing and have the benefits of using native plants.
