MINUTES April 4, 2019 6:301 P.M. STATHAM TREE COMMITTEE 1. CALLTOORDER: Committee was called to order by Chairman Dwight McCormic at 6:30pm. Members present were Chairman Dwight Mccormic, Co-Chairman Edward Jackson, City Clerk, Kay Fortney, Public Works Director Sam) Powell. Community Members attending were: Michael Waldrip, Gary Venable, Jessica Crook and Tim Terelli. 2. INTRODUCTION A. The Georgia Forestry Department determined months ago that some oft the water oaks on Broad Street needed to come down because of decay int the tree trunks. The vision oft this committee ist to plant and replace trees sO that Statham will have al beautiful and safe canopy for its residents and visitors. 3. SELECTING THE SPECIES OF TREES A. The Committee gathered ideas on various trees ini relation to final growth size, heat tolerance, beauty oft the blooms, the lifespan, the location of] planting and soil preparation, watering techniques, cost and who to purchase from. Chairman Dwight McCormic pointed out that a lot of ideas had been discussed and each oft us would go out into the community to compile date on these B. It was decided that the "October Glory Maple" would be the first tree planted at the site where the big tree was cut down at 1937 Broad Street in) March, there will be a small ceremony: at that site on C. Tor make the planting go quickly the committee discussed how the City workers, with permission, would go the day before the planting time and dig thel hole for the tree. This will be discussed subjects discussed and present them at the next meeting. Arbor Day, April 26,2019. further on the next meeting. 4. BEAUTIFICATION OF CITY FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS A. Volunteers . GENERAL! DISCUSSION: FROM THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS A. Several items already listed above were discussed. The kind of trees, cost, lifespan of the trees chosen for planting, soil preparation, location ideas, suggestions how to keep trees watered, size at maturity oft the tree, and any possible interference with power lines. B. Cost would be discussed at next meeting after prices are reviewed. - Possible donations and dedications by residents or business owners in Statham. D. Possibly publicity for the Is'tree planted on Arbor Day, 04/26/19. 7. ADJOURN With no further business to discuss, Edward Jackson made a motion to adjourn. Tim Terelli seconded, unanimous.
